at least i think it must be as i have contacted them 4 days ago and still not had a reply, my error reads...

    AVG Resident shield
    virus identified win32/hantaner

    is found in file
    C:\system volume
    information\_restore{A4D2AOE7-E3DC-487B-8FDC-B52289B88705}\RP7\A0017105.EXE

To remove this virus, please run AVG for windows

i run a complete test, and the results say...
    no virus. :)

    From the way it reads,
It appears that it's hung up in your restore folder. In which case you'll need to purge them. Right click My computer....... choose properties......click on the performance tab.....then down on the file system button. Click on the troubleshooting tab, and put a check mark in disable System Restore.
Do a virus scan from Housecall . Once you come out clean.....go back and take that check mark out.

In XP it's My Computer > Properties > System restore > and put a tag in the box there.

    Reboot and go untag it.

Not to worry Verdi, we're all idiots at something. I'm still looking for what I'm not an idiot at!

Thanks for the catch, again Zephyr! :)

Did you set the scan for your shole computer Verdi? It's odd that it would tell you at one time that it's in the restore folder, and then not subsequently?

Have disabled system restore and done another housecall, and found no virus...
then i searched for restore and found...
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\Restore inside this folder is...
    MachineGuid.txt
    rstrui - system restore app,
    srframe - MMF file &
    srdiag - tool

no hantaner anywhere except in the fantasies of AVG on my machine, talking of which i,m beginning to fantasise about sleep myself...
would you say AVG is good enough, i only use it because its free,
and in the past numero uno Norton av has caused me probs, bit like zone alarm... PAH dont you find you spend more time maintaining windows than actually using it :)

    Gerdnight

p.s. will checkout zephyr,s links tomorrow.

If you've disabled system restore..... you're good to go. It's been purged. Now that you've come back with a clean scan...go back and re-enable.

    Verdi Sire. Smile!

AVG did its job and found the problem. But could not clean the restore folder as it is protected by windows quite possessively.

Avg should now come up clean.

    Does it?

    AVG is good keep it.

From what I understand from other posts, if a Virus is detected the first thing that should be done is to shutdown and purge the System Restore folder(s).

Even if a Virus program says it has cleaned same, it may leave damaged files, or may have even removed some files.

I also understand that is it not a good idea to use any System Restore files after cleaning a Virus as the backups may still contain it.

Not all Virus programs will clean a backup file.
