Hey guys, I'm getting these bsod's when avg tries to update itself in the morning, and bsod'd randomly during the day. I'm almost certain its something todo with avg. The weird thing is, on another machine that I'm running, avg is workin fine. "Both are running xp hme with plenty of memory "
Can anyone recommend a good alternative to avg free?
If I have to buy 1 what's the best for the money?
    ty in advance:)

    Avast is another popular program..

    Introduction to Stop Errors

"Stop errors in a nutshell are errors that are serious enough to cause Windows to stop. They are similar to the blue screen errors that were present on Windows 9x, however there is no option to try and resume the session in a Windows NT Stop Error (Windows 2000 and all XP members included). "

Go here to search for the error message:

If I have any problems with AVG, I download the current version, uninstall the old one and install the new one. (I think) the uninstaller even asks if you wish to keep your settings intact.

If it is automatically set to get updates at startup, set another time or run the updater manually.

If a program asks to restart the computer after updating I always say yes immediately, unless I need to shutdown programs or save data (fairly obvious, but the option to continue working is there).

The absolute best free antivirus today is (believe it or not) AOL Active Virus Shield. I put it on all my clients' systems who want a free av program.
It's a stripped down version of Kapersky Active Virus Shield.
The installer will give a prompt to install the Security Toolbar, DON'T install it cause it's just another AOL toolbar and is not needed. Just uncheck the box next to Security Toolbar.

Kapersky AVP is a high rated av app, much better than AVG, Norton, McAfee, etc. The AOL version updates hourly, just like Kapersky does.

    Change in my AV software

Hey Tony T, I downloaded and installed AOL's Anti-Virus and as I did I got that old feeling of panic  because of my early days on PC with only AOL ****...I have been a loyal user of AVG Anti-Virus for quite sometime but I always liked Kaspersky and all I read about it. So i'm giving it a try, hopefully all will stay quiet on my PC..Thanks for the heads up Tony T

LOL! You're not alone. When AOL AVP was firest recommended to me I shivered. Then I got courageous and installed it on the comp I was working on. Felt relief when I saw I could uncheck the Security Toolbar feature during the install. Rebooted, crossed fingers and saw the Notification Area bubbles from AVP. Then the bubble slowly faded away on its own. That was my second relief, unintrusive software nags that one can live with. After I saw that I could config most of the settings manually, I was fully relieved. Then I achieved satisfaction when it found and cleaned a ton of trojans the user did not know he had. Peace of mind obtained.
