Installed AVG 9.0 Free over the 8.5 verzion using the installer program. All was well for a few weeks and then I checked (as I do weekly) to see how its doing and found that no modules were active, last scan had been four days previously and last auto update had also been four days previously.

Didn't think much of it, tried to re-energize modules but could find no-where to do so.

OK: the usual remedy: uninstall and re-install.

    No joy.

Both in normal and in Safe modes I get to a point where the uninstall program thinks it's done but then I get a splash that says there was one error. Opening that, I find:
Tried to then install to the default directory and got the same message.

1st stop is here for advice.

    Rt click on AVG icon.
    Select open AVG interface.
    Under Tools, select adv settings.
    Click on default button.

    Does that help?

    Nope.

AVG is, for all I can see, disabled. Dunno why it became so, but now I'm trying to get rid of it so I can try Avira instead.

AFAIK, I'm running w/o and AV system, although I have SpamGuar, WinPatrol and Spybot running. (Could one of THOSE be the culprit?)

I have WinPatrol, OnlineArmor firewall and Superantispyware running and AVG is not interfered with.

What I have in that reg key is "AVGInit_dll" type Reg_SZ and data is "avgrsstx.dll "

Because it was working before, you may have picked up something that has changed the AVG installation and also is preventing reinstall.

Maybe you should post in the removing bad stuff forum?

Also consider running online scans for virii and malware?

One of my suspicions, but I wanted to see if there was a software problem rather than pushing the "Malware Alarm" button first.
Move the thread there (how?), or delete this one and repost in Malware?
Suggestions as to which ones to run? Locations?

Best way is to start a new thread in "Malware and Virus removal" forum. Be sure to follow the instructions at the top of the forum before posting.

This is a good online scan for virus finding.

I would go to the bad stuff forum first I think....

The above error seems to be unsolved since AVG ver. 8.0
This was one of the reasons, I dumped AVG with ver. 8.0 introduction and I don't recommend it anymore.

Use AVG Remover: http://www.avg.com/us-en/download-tools and go for Avira as you wanted to.

    Thank you, BRONI and BMoore.

Broni: the AVG remover removed it perfectly... THAT was what was really worrying me.

Now have Avira installed and will see what other trouble I canget into.

    Thanks again!

    O Ye of Little Faith!

My capacity to (censored) up any computer I'm attached to is only exceeded by my absolute certainty that I can get myself out of the outhouse without actually falling in.

(I keep several changes of clothing available at all times.)
