I just installed Avast Internet Security -- the full program.
I am running Vista Home 64 bit
Soon after installation my outbox would not show messages italicized and I could not send the messages.
Avast only seems to have email tech support and you have to wait overnight. They say there must be a conflict with another security program, but I do not have another program installed.

    This is very upsetting.
    Avast was highly recommended.
I do appreciate any help you can give me.

Hi Judy, Have you tried shutting down your Firewall to see if that is the cause? Neil.

What anti virus did you have before AVast, there may be remnants of it left in the system.

You may need to run a registry cleaner to get rid of any old registry keys. Use this one, it is free.

    http://download.cnet.com/ccleaner/

Some AV programs have dedicated cleaners to remove the left overs, depends what you had before.

    Thanks markmadras and retired learner.

I used the registry cleaner and did close the firewall. That didn't help

I un-installed AVG before installing AVAST.

What happens: when I reply or write a new email message it goes to the Outbox as in the past.
However, now - it looks like a toolbar - is inside the outbox and has the name: "junk e-mail type: (none) (2 items, 2 unread) "

You have to click on the plus sign on this blue bar to see the messages. If they are italicized, then clicking the "send" button works. If they are not italicized you have to keep writing the message until it becomes italicized.

I did un-check the "scan outbound messages" in the mail shield.

I have googled re: this problem and have seen others with the same problem, but no solutions have been offered.

    Thanks again for your help

Hi Judy, It might help if you told us what Email you are using. ie. MS Outlook Express - MS Office Outlook - Thunderbird - Gmail ????

I'm not familiar with Vista, so I may have to leave this to the Vista experts. Neil.

Download this remover tool. Download the one for 64bit.

    http://www.avg.com/gb-en/download-tools

    Then download this.

    http://www.avast.com/uninstall-utility

This will give you a clean start so you can then reinstall Avast.

If the problem still persists we will have to look a bit deeper.

You could try reinstalling your mail server.

I need to know what mail service you are using and your browser.

Hi Judy, I know this is not going to help you, but I had that much trouble recently with Avast I have given them the BOOT and gone with MS Security Essentials, and things are fine.

    Try these settings in Avast.

If that doesn't work try completely disabling Avast and make sure it is not running in the background by checking in Task manager, end the program if it is still there.
Then try your email again, if the problem has gone away this will confirm that Avast is the problem. Then we can investigate further.

I guess as you have now got the full version of Avast that you have paid for a years subscription so you are stuck with it, or you will have wasted your money. Hawk22 mentioned Microsoft Security Essentials, I now use this instead of Avast, it has already caught a virus that Avast could not find and you get the whole package for free, for ever.

Anyway, lets see if the last few suggestions improve the situation.

Don't forget to tell us what mail server you are using.

    Thanks for your excellent suggestions.
I have the trial version of Avast and have decided NOT to go any further with this software. I don't need to pay for something that does not work at the "get go" so to speak.

Now, I was about to install Microsoft Security Essentials based on your recommendations and all I have read about it looks stellar.

However, it does not seem to have an email scanner. This is a big concern.

Thanks again for your comments. And your detailed advice I do very much appreciate.

MSE will scan anything that tries to install itself on your PC so you cannot get infected by anything contained in an email. It is a complete package.

Back to the problem. Without Avast my suggestion in post 9 will be of no use. I would now run the remover tools I gave the links for in post 7 to clear the system of all AV software and install MSE. Then try your email again.

To suggest anything else I still need to know what Email clent you are using and the version number. Uninstalling and re-installing the email client may help.

OOPs, I totally forgot to tell my email client. Am getting too old.

I am using Outlook small business edition 2003. And, *.bnin.net offers Postini so viruses and spam are "caught" by this program. In addition as you say, MSE will catch whatever tries to install itself. Thanks for explaining that.

Will go ahead with confidence to rid my computer of Avast and install MSE and the free Zone Alarm firewall that seems to be highly recommended.

I appreciate you giving me the "uninstall" links. Did use the AVG one, and now will use the Avast one.

OK Judy, hope that all goes well. Maybe your email will work once you have all the programs installed as planned, fingers crossed.

Would you consider changing to a more established email client, like Windows Mail Live and signing up to Hotmail. I tried to sign in to the Bnin.net site and it appears to be offline, it is also ranked very low down the list of email clients. It could just be instability in the service that is causing the problem. I have not been able to find any cases of Avast messing up an email service.

Anyway, lets see how things go when everything is reinstalled. I know I have asked this before, but did you ever have any other AV software installed on your PC, even it was just a trial version, and no matter how long for.

    markmadras,

I did get rid of Avast and completely un-installed AVG.
Now have MSE installed. And am having no problems.

Tried to download Zone Alarm firewall but it corrupted my system and I spent 3 hours with HP getting it repaired. HP tech recommended just using the Windows firewall since - they said- it is much better under Vista and Windows 7 than it was under XP.

Did in the past use Kaspersky and Norton in 2005.

Brightnet email - bnin.net - is a small private telephone company in Indiana. Is very stable and offers Postini. I also use sbcglobal. My mail is automatically sent via sbcglobal because Brightnet didn't want to reveal some technical issues years ago. It turned out that some of my emails were not getting sent due to their desire for privacy so it is routed via sbcglobal. In any case I have always had a good experience with my email until Avast. I keep both emails since I have a huge contact list.

    Thanks again very much, Judy
