    hi all im about to change my AV software from Mcafee cos the renewal costs is getting silly.

    i have looked at a few cheaper options and setteled on avast home 4.6, with a veiw to upgrading it to Pro.

    does anyone have/had dealings with avast and could they recomend it? if not what AV software would you recomend (cheaper the better) and yes i know you only get what you pay for :)

    thanks in advanve

    I entirely agree with Pete (although I now use Trend Micro's PC_cillin). In the past I've used both and always found AVG to be top-notch and certainly well-endorsed by MVPs and others in-the-know. I've also used Avast and while it has some good reviews with Virus Bulletin, I was never overly impressed myself. Just my two cents, but I'd definitely go with AVG 7.

    AVG 7 Free gets my vote. Was a devoted NSW for years, but continued program bloat along with cost pushed me away. AVG 7 free has never let me down. Sorry, have never used Avast.

    * Support of multiple languages: English, German, Czech, Slovak, French, Spanish, Brazilian Portuguese, Polish, Serbian, Hungarian, Italian and Dutch are supported at the present time; additional languages are planned or already under development
    * Access to guaranteed high-speed servers for downloading updates and program upgrades
    * Technical support via e-mail (24x7x365) provided by experienced anti-virus specialists
    * Options for configuring multiple program and test settings
    * The ability to create user-defined tests and schedules
    * Discount programs for schools, charities and other not-for-profit organizations
    * and additional functionality
    -----------------
    The two programs stand alone rather than integrate (to my understanding) but there is no conflict.

    In my opinion, the free version is more than adequate.
