AutoPlay works, but autorun.inf is only partially used

    I am using Windows XP SP3.
    The default autoplay option on my PC works just fine. However, when I start using autorun.inf files, I get some problems.
    The "icon" command works fine, but when I try running a program, the whole command seems to be skipped.
    I used to use whatever command someone reccomended (I don't know if some of them actually were), including "start" "run" "execute" and "open ".
    Right now I am using "open ". More specifically, I am using a string of commands I found inside an official program install. Here it is:
    The icon, of course, works. The rest does not. I have tried it on a number of PCs, and found a small number of them which actually run the program. I assume that since it works on some, the file is valid. What, then, is wrong?

    Any suggestions? I am not experienced in registry editing, but if you give me the path, name, and value, I can add or remove any entries.

    Thank you! :)

    Hi Dave987, Welcome to WindowsBBS. :) I hope I'm reading your Thread correctly: Right click My Computer > Right click your CD/DVD drive > Properties > click Autoplay > Select an action to perform or Prompt me each time to choose an action.
    Autoplay may not work in XP SP3 as a security guide. Neil.

    Thanks, and thanks for responding. I know how to set up autoplay function on a PC, but I'm looking to make the autorun.inf file work.
    As I understand it, the Windows autoplay function reads the autorun.inf file, when available, and does what it says, regardless of what the PC would normally do.

    FWIW this is the autorun.inf I wrote many years ago to open a .txt file on insertion of an instructional CD I produced ....

    Code:
    [autorun]
    OPEN=notepad.exe readme book 1.txt
