I had a window that would pop up anytime I inserted a flash drive, CD, DVD, Etc. The pop up asked what I wanted to do.
For some reason it has stopped.
I think it was referred to as a autoplay window.
I checked control panel, hardware and sound, autoplay, and autoplay is checked.
I don't think I did anything to stop the pop up from working as just one day it was gone.
Any ideas on how to get it started again?

Hi Fred. Could you do a system restore to a date before autoplay stopped working?

Pretty much over my head. Its not that big a deal and can live without it. I just worry every time Vista does something new to my computer. I hate not having control over what goes on with Vista.
Another thing I have noticed is that when I put in a DVD movie it does not start on its own. I have to start it. I do have DVD selected to run with Media player.
When I right click on the drive with the DVD installed I don't get the option to "Run With" but I do get an option to "play "

I understand how frustrated this must be for you. You can try running sfc /scannow from command prompt to make sure you have no corrupt files in your windows installation. (make sure you run command prompt as an administrator)

Well the last thing I can offer is for you to follow the instructions in the link I posted. If you believe they are to complicated then I don't know what else to offer to solve your problem.

First step in the link you sent me was to:
Ensure that Shell Hardware Detection service is running
    States to run service.msc
Tried it in the run mode and my computer says it can not find service.msc
Tried it in the search mode and it can't be found.
Could this be for XP and not Vista

    Fred

There is a typo in that article - services. msc, not service.msc as written.

    Start > Run > services.msc > Enter.

Alternatively right click on Taskbar > Task Manager > Services Tab

    HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer

Locate the NoDriveTypeAutoRun registry entry on the right pane.
    Mine reads 0x00000024 (36)
Not sure if that is good or bad.

Fred if you continue to read the article it will tell you what you should set the registry value as.

In Vista the default is 0x91 (145)
I reset it to the above settings. All went well.
Do i need to reboot to take effect as right now it still doesn't pop up the autoplay screen when inserting a flash drive nor does a DVD start playing when inserted.

I would reboot the computer and then test and see if autoplay works again. If it doesn't then you conitnue to follow the instructions in the link I posted.
