I have Windows XP on my computer. If I set up my computer for automatic updates, then when it comes time for Windows to automatically update, what if my computer is turned off at the time? Thank you.

It will check for updates when you start the computer. No need to keep your computer running if you don't want to. ;)

    Hello 427,

    Slightly off topic.

It would be wise to set the automatic Updates option to "Notify me but don't automatically download or install them. "

Then download and install them a little at a time (1 a day).

MS updates have been known to cause problems :)

The ones labeled "critical" create an Add/Remove entry and the non criticals can be potentially rolled back by creating a manual System Restore point before the install and used in case of need.

    Regards - Charles

If your computer is turned off it will not update.
You can either change the time when the automatic updates is turned on ) top option).
You can set the option to alert you but download and install at a time or your choosing.
It has surprised me that the default update time for the default setting which is automatic update is 3 am .

If we are talking about Windows automatic updates here, they will be installed if your computer is turned off when the updates become available. When you boot the computer, one of the first things Windows will do is check to see if there's any updates available. If so, depending on how you have auto update set, they'll either be installed automatically or you'll be notified of the fact that they are available and can choose to download and install whenever it's convenient for you. That's how it works for me anyway.
