I have been trying to get the automatic updates working for some time now without success! Here are some facts:

    - Services... Automatic Updates, Background Intelligent Transfer, Event Log, RPC and Windows Firewall are all set to "Automatic "

    - When I try to start Automatic Updates service I get an error "Could not start the Automatic Updates service on local computer - Error 0x80070057 : The parameter is incorrect "

    - In addition when I look at the system event viewer I get an immediate Service Control Manager error #7023 with this description "The Automatic Updates service terminated with the following error: One or more arguments are invalid "

    - 30 seconds later I get another system event error: DCOM error # 10010 with the following description "The server {E60687F7-01A1-40AA-86AC-DB1CBF673334} did not register with DCOM within the required timeout "

I have searched as best as I could on the net to find a solution without success so far (I have not contacted MS yet).

I have tried the following commands without success
    net.exe stop wuauserv
    regsvr32 /s wuapi.dll
    regsvr32 /s wups.dll
    regsvr32 /s wuaueng.dll
    regsvr32 /s wuaueng1.dll
    regsvr32 /s wucltui.dll
    regsvr32 /s wuweb.dll
    regsvr32 /s jscript.dll
    regsvr32 /s atl.dll
    regsvr32 /s softpub.dll
    regsvr32 /s msxml3.dll
    net.exe start wuauserv

I also tried renaming the SoftwareDistribution directory to no avail...

I tried to log on to the Microsoft update website and after trying to scan my computer gives me error 0x800A0005.

    Any new ideas??

    Thanks

I don't know about your details, but I have had problems with the updates for the past two months. The latest update downloaded (or I thought it did) the files, but none of them installed. At the Windows Update site it was saying that each file has 0Kb.
I did not see any error, but I decided to shutdown the computer. When I did that I saw an icon next to the Shutdown button, which gave me the option to install the updates, and all but one installed. I shutdown the computer, and again I saw the same icon. I selected it, and this time it installed. I go according to a notification, atthe bottom right, near the clock, but I download and install the updates. This time, I beat the notice and I was checking Windows Updates, finding that the updates were available. So, I went on, may be too soon, but, it eventually, worked.
You should contact Microsoft if the problem is different.

    Arie,

Thanks... I tried the MS Fix it Troubleshooter but received an immediate error box "Fix it troubleshooting cannot continue because an error ocurred. This troubleshooter doesn't apply to this computer "

I think that the Troubleshooter link you gave me applies only to Windows 7 and not XP
