    Try using these instructions:

    • Click Start > Run, type services.msc, and then click OK
    • Right-click the Automatic Updates service, and then click Stop
    • Click Start > Run, type cmd, and then click OK
    • Type cd %windir%, and then press [Enter]
    • Type ren SoftwareDistribution SDTemp, and then press [Enter]
    • Type exit, and then press [Enter]
    • In services.msc, Right-click the Automatic Updates service, and then click Start

After the above, revisit Windows Update.

    I'd suggest downloading & running Dial-a-fix.

When you run it, check Fix Windows Update under WU/WUAU then click Go.

That should (hopefully) repair your Windows Update.

Error 0x80070424 indicates that the BITS service does not exist.

This command line should reinstall the BITS service, run from a command prompt:

    %SystemRoot%\System32\rundll32.exe setupapi,InstallHinfSection DefaultInstall 132 %SystemRoot%\inf\qmgr.inf

If you are asked for your OS/SP CD-ROM, just point to the folder \Windows\System32

You did that a few posts ago, so:

Click Start > Run, type cmd, and then click OK

Yes, that's where it goes. You can copy the above text, then right-click in the open command window & select Paste from the menu.

    Try a repair install:

Boot from the WinXP CD (you may have to change a setting in your BIOS that allows you to boot from the CD). Do not choose the option to repair an XP installation using Recovery Console when prompted, choose the option to To set up Windows XP now press ENTER.

After more files have been copied, you'll get another selection screen where you should select the current XP installation, & the option To Repair the selected Windows XP installation, press R.
