For some reason every time that I turn on the computer it automatically brings up the window for dial up. Also, it will not retain the password even after going into the control panel for internet connection. I have gone to selective startup and elliminated any programs that might require dial-up and it still does it. Any one have any ideas?

In Start > control panel > internet options > Internet properties > connections tab: see if the "never dial a connection" is checked. If not, checking it may solve that problem.

Checking the option to "never dial a..." only stops Windows from initiating dialing, not your normal procedure.

If that's not the problem, then perhaps you should look to see if there are any downloaded dialers on your system. Use Ad-Aware

and/or SpyBotSearch&Destroy http://security.kolla.de/index.php?lang=en&page=download. Both have forums, links given for them in the download pages.

There are 3 other places to look :

    1. Start, Programs, StartUp folder may have a program that starts when you boot.

    2. In the MSCONFIG StartUp Tab you may well have a program like RealPlayer, Musicmatch (and many others) that check for newer versions. You should look at the Properties, Tools or similar wording for each of these programs to see if they connect to the web.

    3. The usual one that is overlooked is Windows Update. Go to Start, Settings, Control Panel, Windows Updates and see what is checked.

    Good Luck

Another culprit for this is AOL Instant Messenger. If you have AIM, this could be it.

By default, the options for "Start AIM when Windows starts" and "Automatically sign on when AIM starts" are checked.

Go into your AIM preferences, and uncheck the option to automatically sign on. This did the trick for me.
