I have been using Crazy Browser and I like it, but I've been told that Firefox is safer and more secure. I downloaded Firefox yesterday and have been playing with it. I like that CB will automagically open a new tab when you type in a new url. Can Firefox be made to do that? I figured out how to manually open a new tab, but...

Sometimes when I click on an url FF seems to open a new instance of itself and I'll have a new tab on the Windows taskbar at the bottom, rather than opening a new tab at the top of FF, but I haven't figured it all out yet...

    Thanks!

    1. Click on "open a new tab" icon then type in URL in address box.

    2. Right click on URL in web page and select open in new tab.

You beat me to it, Bill, but only because I was taking the subject a bit farther. :)

    Hi Ed,

    Welcome to the BBS!

To the best of my knowledge, FF won't do what you want without a little tweaking. You can, however, open any link (or bookmark item) in a new tab simply by right-clicking on the link and selecting "Open Link in New Tab ". If the "Open in new tab" icon isn't on your toolbar, right-click anywhere on the bar and select "Customize ". You can set up your toolbar any way you like by dragging and dropping icons to and from the toolbar.

Tabbrowser Extensions (TBE) is the tweak I was referring to. It provides many more tab options than FF without it.

I've found that the easiest way to install it is to right-click on its download link and select "Save Link As... ", then select the location of your choice, where it will be saved as an .xpi file. Close FF, double-click on the file, and select FF as the program you wish to install TBE with. It's pretty much self-explanatory after that.

When you reopen FF, If TBE hasn't installed a "Tab" menu by default you can access its Preferences sheet by opening Tools > Extensions. TBE will probably be your only extension at this point, so it will already be highlighted. Just click the Options button to open TBE Preferences. Click on "Appearance" to show the "Tab" menu setting. The feature(s) you're interested in are found under "Use Tab ".

Feel free to post back with any problems or questions. HTH.

    Ed ...

Be that as it may, I've used TBE for months, with several different versions of FF, and numerous updates to TBE, and have experienced absolutely no difficulties. Truthfully, I can't imagine using FF without TBE, but that's just my personal opinion.

Edit: Let me rephrase that last sentence ... I can't imagine using FF without some of TBE's capabilities but, until the developers see fit to include them in FF, I'll continue to use TBE.

TBE1.1.1 . Is this the same? I see one of the comments that it is the same as TBE but without the bugs.

    Bill ...

Tabbrowser Preferences 1.1.1 is completely different from Tabbrowser Extensions 1.12. TBP doesn't offer nearly the amount of customization that TBE does, and it lacks one feature that keeps me using TBE ... the ability to put a Close button on each individual tab.

I know that there are numerous other ways to close a tab (menu, context menu, "master" Close button, and keyboard coommand) but, once you get used to having a Close button on each tab, it's hard to give it up.

Edit: Tabbrowser Preferences 1.2.2 is now available, with essentially the same features.

And, then... leave it to AOL, and the Netscape Browser beta will do nothing but opening Tabs, not windows. I, finally, figured out how to use that beast, which probably has all the Tabbrowsing extentions every developed.
May be there is a way in Firefox, from Options|Advanced|Tab browsing.
I like to have a list of Tabs which I have open at all times, and no interloper, unless I invite him/her.

Sorry, I can't help pointing out that Automagically is not a word in the dictionary, but automatically is.
But it sure was an Automagic process when when something happened with no rhyme and reason, like in the Netscape Browser.

Welcome to the Forum, Ed M.!

    Ed,

I have an automagic answer for you... ;)

Middle click the link, or if you have a mouse wheel, clicking the wheel will do the same. CTRL+T opens a blank tab.

To close tabs, press CtrlCmd+W, click the Close Tab button, middle-click the tab, or select File > Close Tab.

To close all tabs other than the current one, right-clickpress Ctrl, click on the tab and choose Close Other Tabs.

The above is from Firefox Help | Tabbed Browsing.

You really don't need an extension, just let your fingers do the clicking...

Many, myself included, have the wheel programmed to do something else (a double-click, for me), in which case nothing happens when double-clicking a link or tab.

As for not needing an extension to handle tab operations, to each his own. IMO, Firefox's basic tab features don't go nearly far enough, which is why the extensions were written..

A window will not open, but a Tab is created (they call it opened). under a number of conditions which do not require an extention. Right click on link|Open Tab can be selected, or open window. By the way I tamed the Netscape Browser, no more tabs all over the place.

    Ed ...

It appears that neither I, nor anyone else, has answered your questions in this post.

First, no, I have no experience with "OpenNewWindowFromHere ".

Second, that native ability is already built into FF. If I understand you correctly, you want to open a new window, but not necessarily from a link on a webpage. There are three basic ways that I can think of ...
    1. From the keyboard, Ctrl + N.

    2. From the File menu.

    3. From the toolbar. I don't recall what buttons are on the original toolbar, because I've customized mine (easy to do). Right-click anywhere on the menubar or toolbar and select "Customize ". After the "Customize Toolbar" window opens, you can drag and drop to/from to your heart's content. There are buttons for both New Window and New Tab.
From a link, just right-click and open it either in a new tab or in a new window.

    Another country heard from:

I don't recall if I "tweaked" anything else, but I think you can open a link in a new tab by:

Select link in page and CTRL + left click.

I have not found anyway to OPEN an URL in a new tab directly from the location bar.
CTRL+enter does not work as it does in MOZ.

You can, but I find it easier to right-click on the link and select "Open Link in New Tab ".

Open the new tab first, using any of the methods previously mentioned, then type in the URL.

    Jim,
It's really just a laziness issue on my part... I've been using Crazy Browser, with it you can just type a new url in the address bar and it opens a new tab for the url you just typed. I doesn't take you to a new site in the same tab INSTEAD of the site you were at. You end up with your old site on one tab and your new site on a new tab. CB works the same with your book marks. Click a bookmark and get a new tab; click two bookmarks and get two new tabs. FF takes you to the new site in the same tab and your old site is gone unless you use the back arrow.

I know the various ways to make a new empty tab with FF and then just type your url, or right click for a new tab on a bookmark, etc, but it just takes an extra click or so. Like I said it's just a laziness issue... :) I just got used to doing it the other way with CB. It's like you liking the 'close' button on each tab. :)

It looks like there are a couple of extensions that might do it on the Mozilla add-on page https://addons.update.mozilla.org/extensions/ but I haven't tried any of them. I'm afraid of messing something up in my inexperience, so I wondered if any of y'all had experience with any of them. Thanks! And thanks for the welcome, Ramona.

    Hi Ed,

TBE will allow you to do exactly what you want, in Use Tab > Location bar.

I wouldn't worry too much about extensions messing anything up, as they're easily uninstalled. Hopefully, some of the more important ones will eventually be included in FF but, as one of the primary aims of the development team is to keep the code as small as possible, I wouldn't count on it.

Besides, everyone has different opinions about what's important and what should be included, which is why extensions are so helpful ... they let you pick the features that are right for you.

For a REALLY complete list of Firefox extensions, see here.

Or you can right click on the tool bar, click 'customize', then drag a 'new tab' button onto the tool bar. Cool! That might help some. There are some other buttons you might like also.
