One of my clients is into making commercials & advertisements. He uses 3ds max for modelling & animation.

He renders the frames using BackBurner on approximately 50 computers [desktops/workstations] at a time but it seems its not enough. Now he wants to add more horsepower but has no space to add more computers and not enough money to go in for blade servers.

What would be the cheapest way to add more power without claiming more space or breaking the bank ?

Not sure if I can help. :D

What horsepower do you need, CPU. drive size/speed or memory? I don't know blade servers, but can they be made from old PCs or servers?

Does he have the 32-bit or 64-bit version?

    This is what Autodesk lists:

Without knowing too much, this is what I do know:

    1. Get the fastest CPU possible
    2. Get all the RAM you can buy. Fast ram helps
    3. Either use a SCSI or SAS drive, or better yet SSD

Maximum possible with minimum expense. :D But space is a constraint too.

    Interesting thought, but sadly no.

Autodesk, like all other software publishers, lists only the bare minimum requirements to get it going.

Everything is 64 bit - right from servers to desktop.

Rendering doesn't use hard disk much, it requires CPU & lots of it. Currently he has AMD Phenom II X4 & X6.

I am not too sure about the RAM. 8 GB of RAM should be enough I think.

Would love to have more inputs. Always open for suggestions.

I doubt you'll get more info... I mean... they are using 50 PC's . Time for some serious servers it seems.

I think then I can mark this thread as Resolved & continue my search elsewhere.
