autochk program not found

AUTOCHECK PROBLEM

My computer runs under WinXP Home. After having resolved another problem (chkdsk running constantly, until I managed to unset the dirty bits on the two drives concerned), I now get on bootup or restart briefly the message "˜autochk* program not found, skipping autocheck’. After that startup proceeds normally (no startup looping).

There is no Hotfixkb824105 in the "˜add/remove programs’ section of the control panel.

The files autochk and chkdsk in system32 have been overwritten with working copies from another computer, also running under WnXP Home.

I am very hesitant to try using the XP install disk in repair mode.

Should I just live with the situation and perform a manual chkdsk from time to time?

 

The most common cause of that error is the boot partition being marked as Hidden. Sounds unlikely to be the cause of your problem, but worth checking.

Would there be any risk or consequences to your system if you run the cd for XP-installation repair on your PC now?

I believe it would leave your system as is, with minor changes probably on some of your system files.

Probably worth a try...
