Open a cmd prompt and run chkntfs with no switches on each of your drives to see if any are marked as dirty.

From a cmd window, it you key in

chkntfs c: it should return the type of file system and tell you the drive is dirty or is not dirty. "Dirty" in this context means the OS has noted a problem and will run chkdsk at boot time to try and fix it.

It just occured to me that I've never tried that command on a system with FAT32 though. Not sure if it would work or not.

    Newt,
Tried again to no avail.I noticed that you spelled it to different ways, chkntfs c: & chkntfs.I don't no about the fat 32,do you know how I can tell if i have that.
If it's any help my OS is win 2K pro.
    Thanx,
    Tom

From a cmd prompt, key in chkdsk and press Enter. It will basically do a scandisk without fixing anything it might find but will report what it finds.

The first line should tell you the type of file system you are running.

After it completes, let us know which file system and if any errors were found.

Looking at another site on the net it implies your boot.ini may be pointing at the wrong partition.

I've also seen reference on the web to MS hotfix KB824105 causing this issue. It may be worth de-installing that if you've got it to see if that helps.

In the the cmd prompt I typed in chkdsk, was not recognized.
In regards to MS hotfix KB824105,when I try to uninstall a window pops up saying if uninstalled these programs may not work(it lists alot).

This is beginning to sound like the path portion of your environment is messed up so the OS can't find apps it needs. If that is the case, we can start looking for a fix for it - may be pretty simple. But first, we gotta make sure exactly what is happening.

Try this. Open a cmd prompt and try running chkdsk by giving the full file spec. If you have the OS on C: and in winnt it will be
    c:\winnt\system32\chkdsk.exe

I tried this c:\winnt\system32\chkdsk.exe not recognized. It seems all the ideas I'm given to type in the cmd prompt fail.I wonder if there's a connection.
