Hi all, this is not a PC question, just general USB.
I use a 160Gig 2½" Hard drive for my Music MP3 & FLAC connected to my Yamaha AV Receivers USB Port. ( My preference to IPod )
Question is this, when should I remove the hard drive from the AV, when I turn off the AV, it stays on stand by until I turn it off at the power point, is it save to unplug the hard drive while on stand by, as the blue power light on the hard drive is still on as well, or should I only unplug it when the power on light on the hard drive is off.
I have 30 GIG worth of selected music on it and I would prefer not to have to install all that with all its different categories of music again if I can help it.

All replies are appreciated useful or not.:):) ( be happy, nearly XMas)

You can power down the drive at any point as it's not being used by an operating system, per se. However, the Yamaha is running a small embedded operating system, thus it's probably best to power down the Yamaha, then power down the drive. And keep a backup of you multimedia files on another drive or storage media.

I hope you realize that _ALL_ hard drives will die. They're mechanical, and as such, they wear out. So, if what you're storing on one is valuable, recommend getting it backed up. (I.e., copy it to some other media.)

Thanks Tony T, I think I keep doing as I had been, by making sure the AV is off and also the drive, to avoid unnecessary risks.

Thank you also SpywareDr, my Music is well saved, on another external HD plus burned to DVD.
I simply don't like the idea of having to re-install due to a avoidable error on my behalf.
    Merry Christmas Guys.
