Are there any simple plug-ins that will work with version 7.02 to play wave and midi files? I hate Quicktime and am looking for something like the Beatnik player that's compatible with Netscape 4.8.

    Hi KennyV1967,

My personal preference is the free Crescendo Midi Player, Version 5.1.

I use the Netscape Communicator LiveAudio Plugin for wav files. Note, that it will also play midi files, and thus you wouldl only need one plugin for both audio files types.

If you have Netscape 4.8 installed, look in your Plugins Folder and copy these LiveAudio plugin files to your Netscape 7.02 plugins folder:

    npaudio.dll
    npaudio.zip

In fact, you can copy your entire Communicator 4.8 Plugins folder to Netscape 7.02's Plugins folder. Most Plugins will work without having to reinstall programs.

P.S. I will go to any length to avoid QuickTime!

    Ramona,

After I copy those two files over, is there anything else I need to do to get it to work? I tried using the Beatnik Player in 7.02 but it does not work.

Also, I think ZoneAlarm Pro has something to do with my problem of audio files embedded in web sites not playing. This thing is turning out to be more of a headache than it's worth.

    Thank you...

    Hi Kenny,

That should be all you have to do, just copy the files into your Netscape 7.02 Plugin Folder.

As for ZA Pro, I don't know what to tell you, as I am cheap and use the free Version. No settings to be dealt with as far as embedded audio.

Post back if you continue to have problems.

    npaudio vs crescendo?

Ramona, If I copy the npaudio.dll and the npaudio.zip files to my NS7.02 plugin folder will it affect the crescendo plugin?

Why does not NS include those two files with 7.02?

    Thanks,

    Marvin

    Hi Marvin,

    To answer your question first:

Yes, it will have an effect on your Crescendo plugin. As you may remember, the last plugin installed, when you are using more than one plugin for a specific file type, will be the default player.

If you copy the LiveAudio plugin from Communicator, and you still want to use Crescendo for midi files, move the Crescendo plugin out of the Plugin Folder. Now copy the LiveAudio plugin into the Plugin Folder, followed by the Crescendo plugin. Test a midi file online, and if LiveAudio is activated, you will need to reinstall Crescendo. No need to uninstall first, just install it over itself. A PITA, but sometimes necessary.

LiveAudio is not included for the simple reason that Netscape 7 is not an upgrade for Communicator. It's a new program from the ground up.

    Ramona,

I moved those two files in to the 7.02 plug in folder and it worked!!! I despise Quicktime and am sure glad you responded with this fix! I also tried moving Beatnik in as well but it will not work.

    Thanks Ramona!

    Hi Kenny,

Don't be sad about Beatnik. The audio quality is not as good as LiveAudio. However, Crescendo's audio quality surpasses both Beatnik and LiveAudio.

    Beatnik has two files:
    beatnik.class
    npbeatnk.dll

Did you move both of them?

    Ramona...

Aaaahhhhhh I only moved the one Beatnik file....cool, i'll try the other one now! :)

As far as sound quality goes, i'm after convienance more than quality. I rather enjoy that little Beatnik box that pops up when a clip is played. Simple, easy and hassle free. :)

Marv, i've searched for two months for info on how to get an audio plug-in to work with 7.02. Ramona here is the only one to have offered a solution! :)

    Take care.....
