I have a folder on the desktop on Vista, whick had a number of movies in it. The audio and video data were held in seperate files in each movie. I now find that suddenly all the audio data is gone from the Audio_ts files, but the video files are intact. Has anybody ever come across this problem b4.

Hello Graham, hope your weather on Thursday Island isn't as strange as some around our area.

Not too many suggestions, one is not to keep very large or a lot of files on the desktop. To me it's like placing paperwork on a desk, you want it in the filing cabinet, not sitting on your desk. I keep files in the Documents folder (or on another completely separate drive) and make shortcuts to them if the desktop starts to get cluttered.

The desktop does lots of jobs that are not just like a normal directory...background, themes, sidebar/gadets, Active Desktop (a source of many desktop problems in the past), Desktop Managers, etc, etc. I recommend not storing files on the desktop, the place to keep them is Documents (or make your own folder/directory if you want to keep them separate).

Try running Error Checking on your C: drive (Windows drive). A full defrag might help.

Try to sort out your files so that they are not sitting on the desktop.

    Matt
PS: Do you have plenty of free-space left on your Windows drive?

    Mattman,
Yes we have had a lot of weird weather up this way, we're in the monsoon season , so it is to be expected. But it's a bit more intense this year. I have started to move files around, with shortcuts to the desktop, but i am looking at getting another internal drive , just to store all the goodies on.

I have run Disk Doctor Photo Recovery, but it came up blank. It appears that only the audio files have done a runner, everything else on the desktop is fine. My kids use the PC ( BUT NOT ANY MORE ) during the day, so i'm starting to suspect that they have done something.

I even ran sys restore, but again , nothing. I don't know what has caused this, but lucky for me i did have a back up copy on a removeable drive. But it still does not answer the question as to why only the audio files, and nothing else on the desktop. Anyway, thanks for ur input Matt, greatly appreciated. I'll run the error chech, and see what it comes up with.

If it stops raining, i'll go out and catch a Mackeral for you.

    Cheers
    Graham.

    p.s. I have 400 Gb spare on C drive.

Do you know if if there ever was any files in the audio_ts folders?

If these are DVD videos that you've ripped to your hard drive it's normal for there to not be any files in that folder. I've got 30 - 40 DVDs on my hard drive and none of them have any files in that folder. It's my understanding that it's there for compatibility reasons only. For older DVD players that look for the folder. The folder is there pretty much to just make the DVD compliant with DVD specs.

If I burn one of the movies to a DVD, they play just fine, regardless of the empty audio folder. Same goes for if I play one right off the hard drive.

As with Zander - I have some 425 movies on DVD - NONE of which have anything in the AUDIO_TS folder. Don't know really why that folder is there...
    You must have separated them..
I think you may have to look elsewhere for the audio problem. Each movie is in it's own folder, and the audio is normally incorporated into that particular video. You may have a hardware problem, or your video player went belly up...

I must admit I had never checked the Audio_ts files before, because i had no need to. When I found i had no audio, and checked them, i found the files were empty, and i thought this was the problem. As you say, i must have a problem elsewhere. I look closer at the audio control panel and see what i can find. Many thanks.

    Cheers
    Graham
