I replaced the mainboard on a PC and all new devices have been successfully recognised except for the Audio, which doesn't work. Theres a list of Audio devices none of which can be selected and deleted so I am guessing that they refer to the old audio device causing the new one to not function properly.

With Windows 98 it was possible to remove references to all device drivers simply by deleting the HKLM\Enum thereby permitting all devices to be re-found. I cannot find a similar setting for XP. Can anyone advise the best route to take.

Does the mobo have an onboard audio chip? If so have you loaded the drivers from the mobo CD? Do you have a separate sound card? - if so you may need to disable the onboard audio in BIOS.

If you changed the mobo and hitched up the existing hard drive with an install of XP there are bound to be problems. A repair of XP may be the only solution at the end of the day - but not yet :)

NO, XP uses a HAL (Hardware Abstraction Layer) which must be rebuilt . You need to do a repair install to do this.
Moving Xp to a new motherboard
