    This may get a little complicated;

    I have recently formatted my hard drive and installed Win 98 SE. After setup was complete, I began installing drivers from my PC100 driver installation cd. The VGA drivers installed successfully, but i had trouble knowing which audio drivers to install and how to do it. I was led to believe, by an unclear readme and the fact that there was no setup application only an uninstall feature, that i would have to uninstall the default audio drivers that windows had auto-installed. I began the uninstall option on the cd, which told me that it would uninstall the default drivers and then i could install the drivers i needed from the disk. From there, the computer restarted as required. However, during startup, I was given the following message;

    Configuration Manager cannot load because one of the following files is either not present or has an invalid version number;

    VMM.VXD, SHELL.VXD, VTD.VXD, VXDLDR.VXD, VPICD.VXD or VWIN32.VXD

    Try running Setup again

    I am now unable to enter windows. I then restarted to the command prompt and formatted the drive again, then reinstalled win98 SE. When setup was complete, I looked at the audio drivers in the device manager (sorry, can't remember what they were called - can't get in Windows to see). Each driver had the yellow icon with exclamation mark. Also, when looking at the status of each one, they said they weren't installed (Code=28). :confused: Again, I repeated the process above for uninstalling drivers and now i can no longer enter windows again.:mad:
    It might be worth noting that I had to install video drivers manually as the computer doesn't seem to want to autodetect anything, or even find anything when i search for any new hardware.
    Thanks for your patience.

    You will need to format and install windows again, or reinstall.
    Do not uninstall the sound files again.

    This time to install the drivers, go into the Device Manager and remove the sound entries and reboot.
    Or
    Double click each one, click on the Driver tab, then click on Update driver.
    Follow the prompts and know where the correct drivers can be located.
    It is the INF files that will do the actual install of the drivers through windows setup.
    Or
    Remove the entries in Device Manager, go to Control Panel\Add New Hardware, let it run and detect the sound card and install the drivers from there.
