I am repairing an ATX - PCCHIPS PC for a friend. Her X removed the power switch for some unknown reason. I purchased a new one and installed it but it does not shut down the power. This is an old PC for her daughter who just started school. The model number is M598LMR. Running Windows 98SE.

Is it a push button type switch? If it is try holding the button for about 10 seconds.

    Hi OLDSALTY

Try this, In the Control Panel open Display
and click the Screen Saver tab.
    Click the Settings button.
In the Power Management Properties click the Advanced tab.
Under, "When I press the power button on my computer: "
    select Shutdown and click Apply.

I guess I should have mentioned this. The computer is loaded with 98SE. Therefore the power management does not provide the option suggested.

    The switch:
Its set in the Normally Off (OPEN)Position and when pressed comes on for a short Period.
There is not a way to keep it on.

Try using the RESET button for the POWER switch. It's a momentary switch. You turn off the system by holding the off button for 5 seconds.

    OLDSALTY,
My BIOS has many settings that control the power switch function. Take a look at yours.
That's what's causing your problem if you don't have an odd sort of switch.

    Hi OLDSALTY,

Here is the motherboard manual if you do not have it:
    http://www.pcchipsusa.com/support-discontinued-manuals.asp
The motherboard supports using either AT or ATX power systems (I wonder about there being a mix up between the two, but I cannot see how). Check through the "Installing the motherboard" section that the connections are correct.

Check and make sure that the front cover of the case is seated all the way. If not, when you press the power button it may not be making a complete connection (this would be applicable if the the power button was the AT type).
Sounds like an AT power button that is not being fully depressed.

    Matt
