Hello everyone. I upgraded to Windows Vista Ultimate about a week ago and so far I haven't had any major problems with Windows Vista. Vista itself is quite stable and I very happy with all of the new features it has. :) I am facing one minor problem with ATI however. I have an ATI Radeon X1650 Pro 512 MB AGP x8 graphics card. Windows Vista detects the card and everything and Windows Aero runs great on my machine.

On my Windows XP machine I installed an ATI Driver which came with ATI Catalyst Control Center and an ATI Display Driver. I also installed ATI Hydravision. Those drivers that I installed on my Windows XP Professional machine worked great and I never had a problem installing or using them.

After I did an in-place-upgrade to Vista I went to ATIs website to download the latest graphics driver for Vista which is version 7.1 32-bit version. After I downloaded it I installed it. Installation seemed to go fine; it installed Catalyst Control Center but I noticed that the installer skipped over the ATI Display Driver and that didn't get installed. :( The ATI Catalyst Control Center works fine but I can't run ATI Hydravision or play any games because the installer didn't install the display driver. I have tried multiple times of uninstalling and reinstalling all of the ATI software. And each time the installer doesn't install the display driver. :( I looked at the log that was generated by the installer and it shows that everything installed successfully except the ATI display driver which shows that it failed. :( Why is this occuring? Is this just a bug in the ATI installer because I noticed that they released it on January 29 so maybe its still a beta version. If its ATIs fault that the installer doesn't install the display driver I hope they release a patch for this issue. If its not ATIs fault is there some setting in Windows Vista thats preventing the display driver from being installed? Anyway thanks in advance for any comments and/or suggesstions. :)

    Here is the insallation log:

Sorry about that. They must not have that part of the driver programmed yet. Suspect you have to wait for it. You can try contacting ATI, but I have not been sucessful in the past, so stopped using their cards.

Ok Sparrow thanks for the reply. Ya I figured that it may be a bug in the ATI Installer because they released it on January 29 so it probably has alot of bugs that ATI has to work out. So ya I will probably wait for ATI to release a new display driver for my graphics card. But has anyone else had problems with the ATI drivers for Windows Vista? I went to rage3d.com and I read some posts there and a lot of people seem to be having problems with the ATI drivers. :p I hope ATI gets these issues sorted out.

    Regards,
    Evan

Hello Geoff Hands. Thanks for your reply. I was able to install the ATI Catalyst Control Center and the Display Driver version 7.2 without any problems. :) Catalyst control center and the display driver are now fully operational and run without problems. :D But unfortuneatly when I start some of my games they start up fine but within seconds of the games showing the main menus the game freezes up and I can't get out of it so I end up having to hold the power button to turn off the machine that way. When I had the regular microsoft driver installed on my system Doom 3 ran fine and it didn't lag at all. With the new display driver that I installed with catalyst control center I ran Doom 3 again and the whole game lagged and froze up where I couldn't even exit the game. Whats with this? Why are my games lagging so much all of a sudden? I thought ATI was supposed to speed up the performance of these types of games. :( Is there anything I can do to somehow speed up my games and have them not freeze when they start up? Any help on this issue would be appreciated. :)

    ATI driver will not install

I'm sorry that I can't help with your freezing problem. I got the driver to install as soon as I downloaded the new version and it's doing what I have asked so far ( enabling two monitors so that I show different programmes on each - at the moment my Windows Mail on one, and this thread on the other in IE 7. The real test comes when I have Photoshop on one and Bridge on the other...
I still have problems about this administrator permission thing - wish I could disable it ! I am the sole user of my machine - it's a home installation, and my wife has her own lap-top which she rarely uses , so logging in and administrator permissions is just a lot of unnecessary hassle for me- even if I knew how to do it which I don't.
I'm trying to get rid of Outlook ( and use Windows Calendar, and then synch' it with my pocket pc ), but keep being refused permission...

Thanks Geoff Hands. I know for a fact that Windows Vista isn't really the issue here. Its also know that its not Doom 3 either. The issue is the ATI drivers. :( Also I know for a fact that all of my games are compatible with Vista and when I had the display driver that came with Vista Doom 3 ran fine without any problems. I also got the latest patch for Doom 3 which was 1.31, I ran the game in Windows XP Service Pack 2 compatibility mode and I ran the game as an Administrator but those options didn't make a difference. I also have an update on the status of the problem. It seems now that when I start up Doom 3 I get an error from windows that says Doom 3 has stopped working and then I get a notification in my taskbar that says the display driver has stopped reponding but has successfully recovered. So that just shows that the display driver is whats causing Doom 3 to not start and freeze in the main menu of the game. :( I don't know what else to do. Maybe there is some setting the the Catalyst Control Center thats causing the driver to not respond when certain games are played. It seems I get the same error message when I play Star Wars Jedi Knight 2 Jedi Outcast and Star Wars Jedi Knight 3 Jedi Academy. All 3 of those games are openGL games by the way. All of my other games that aren't openGL work just fine without any issues. So maybe somone else can help me out on this issue. :)

Has anyone else had any problems with certain games not functioning when an ATI driver is installed on a Windows Vista Operating System? Please let me know. Thanks! :)

    Same issue

    Hello
I had the same issue with CCC on X1450. However all trials with V7.1 and 7.2 were with the same result - CCC no working and even ATI drivers disappeared, followed by total crash (black screen) and re-install from recovery CD ( brand new notebook). I would to known HOW you re-install V7.2 ? Nothing blocking in meantime, all installation screens were well displayed ?
    thx

Hello Mat. The thing with my issue is that the ATI display driver and Catalyst Control Center seems to install fine with no issues. However like I said in my previous posts my openGL games that I have which include Doom 3, Star Wars Jedi Knight 2 Jedi Outcast, and Jedi Knight 3 Jedi Academy don't work and I get the same errors on all 3 games as I said in my previous post. Im still trying to see if a fix is available. I may try turning of Data Execution Prevention and seeing if the games start up or not. :) Again thanks for your reply. :D
