Hi, im looking to build a system with an ASUS A8N-SLI Deluxe Socket 939 Athlon 64 FX-53, 2.4 GHz 1600FSB 1MB CACHE and a hand full of RAM.

Ive always seen the 64bits running on Windows XP but im wondering if it can run in 2000Pro?

If it is just XP is there a special version of XP i need to get?

Id pref to run in 2kpro as i cant be bothered with the expense of XP. also im not an XP fan - its too bubbly.

Let me know what you think :)

PS>Wasnt sure to post in 2k, hardware or XP so randomly chose :)

    Stuart.

    Stuart:

64 bit XP is a relatively new OS and you can have it free for a year. Most XP installations are 32 bit, even if installed on a 64 bit Athlon which will run both 32 bit and 64 bit apps. As to 2000 - to the best of my knowledge - not with 2000 Pro, don't know about 2000 Server. If no to 2000 Pro (don't think so but not 100% sure) and yes to 2000 Server (again, don't know for sure) you might be able to use the utility NT Switch which converts Pro to Server or Server to Pro - works with 32 bit versions. 2003 Server is available in 64 bit version.

    ;)

Ok so to run with my 64Bit athlon i would need either

    XP 64 bit
    or
    2003 Server 64Bit
    or
    Windows 2000 (but not Pro)

Think ive got that, if im wrong correct me.

Im assuming that it will explicitly say "64 Bit" on the box somewhere?

    Thanks,
    Stuart.

No, you're wrong. This will run 32 bit stuff very well. Just because its a 64 bit chip doesn't mean it's restricted to 64 bit apps.

    Hi Stuart,

The computer will run any normal versions of Windows.

As Rockster was saying you can get the "beta" version of Windows 64bit, BUT, there are not many drivers around for the hardware to run in that version of Windows, also, I'm told there are not many applications around that are written for 64bit.

Win 2000pro would run as if it was on a 32bit computer with the same/equivalent speed CPU.

If the motherboard has "dual memory" capability, you will make some immediate speed gains if you use matched sticks (a "kit ").

This is the way I read the current status.

    Matt
