I have been having an intermittent problem while booting up my computer. I think this is a hardware problem as the line comes up at the screen displaying connected hardware. The computer shows the following warning
    "Warning: SPD1 not found at DIMM(S) (1) "
I have used Win 98 and Win XP but it makes no difference changing the OS. This problem does not seem to affect the computer in any way, but I’m fed up of seeing it.
I would greatly appreciate any help.
    Alex

I looked in the BIOS settings last night but i cannot find anything to do with this. I don't think i have changed anything in the setup options but i loaded the system defaults. This stopped the problem for a while :) but it has now come back :(. The number at the end of the line has changed from 1 to 2, but i don't know if this means anything.
I would appreciate any help greatly.
    Thanks
    Alex

You have a dimm that your BIOS doesn't like because it's not PC-100 compliant. See this. If it works, forget it.

    interesting link, sparrow...

Alex - something you could check if you wish peace of mind. If you can get the computer to boot to OS without seeing the error message (even once) (do the "restore BIOS defaults" thing again if need be), ensure that the memory as seen by the OS (My Computer > Properties) gives you the same as if you boot and do see the error message.

If you can get equal results, then I think you're probably OK.

Reason for asking: some SPD problems result in the particular memory bank getting "knocked out ", you lose that chunk of memory. As you (presumably) have two (or more) modules fitted, the computer would probably behave pretty normally, just go a tad slower and rely more on the swapfile.

If you get different results please post back and let us know.

Intermittents always make me uneasy! Did restoring the BIOS defaults actually cause the change in behaviour, or was this a coincidence?

    best wishes, HJ.

I managed to boot the computer without the warning and loaded the default bios settings. As before all the number on the end changed. If its not doing my computer any harm then i think its probably better to leave it. It's always better to either have something wrong with your computer or not than to have an intermittent problem which you worry about every time you turn on the computer!
    Thanks for the help anyway

    Alex :)
