    What have I forgotten?
I've just installed a Asus A7N8X m/b into an old Tower and it fires up, Posts, will go into BIOS and is set with date/Time etc.
It recognizes HD drives (with XP Pro OS), ROM drives, RAM etc.
My problem is getting Asus drivers and how to install them.

I know this is an old M/B, but it's just a fill in and the original Asus CD with all the drivers has been lost along the way.
I downloaded from Asus nf2v116_xp but I can't find an .exe in the pack.

I've set the Bios to CD ROM as 1st drive, but it won't execute. Neil.

If you're attempting to update the BIOS, try it like this:
    1. On the Asus Support For Motherboard A7N8X-X page, select "WinXP" in the "OS:" pulldown menu, then:

      • Under "BIOS ", download the latest BIOS version. This zip file will contain the ".bin" file needed by the Awdflash.exe (executable) program below.

      • Under "BIOS-Utilities ", download the "Awdflash BIOS update tool ". This zip file will contain the Awdflash ".exe" (executable) program that will be applying the ".bin" (above) update to your BIOS.

      • Under "Manual ", download the "A7N8X-E Deluxe User's manual English Version E1875" (.PDF file).

    2. Unzip the first two files (.bin and .exe) into the root directory of your hard drive.

    3. Follow the instructions in the "A7N8X-E Deluxe User's manual English Version E1875" beginning on page 31, (Chapter 2).

You say the system recognizes the HD with XP Pro on it - where did that XP Pro come from? If it was previously installed on that HD and that HD originally came with a different computer/motherboard, then that may be your problem - you may need to format the drive first. And of course, remember, if the Windows license for that XP Pro is an OEM license, then it is tied to the original motherboard/computer and not legally transferable to a different computer/motherboard.

Also note that setting the boot order to CD does NOT automatically cause the computer to boot to the CD. All it does is cause the system to prompt you (watch the lower left corner) early in the boot sequence to press any key to boot to CD. If you don't press a key when prompted, the system will quickly time out and move to the next drive listed in the boot order.

Thanks Doc I'll give it a go and report back.
I had a play a couple of nights ago with a HD I had installed Ubuntu 11 on a couple of years ago, and when I put it into the comp with this Asus m/b, it started up and everything worked OK.
It then said there was a newer version available and I OK'ed to install. It's now running with Ubuntu V13.4.
I can understand why people use Linux as it seems to run without me having to worry about installing m/b drivers. Even my HP printer is working with it.

Bill, you are right. The HD with XP Pro on it is legit. It was running on the comp with my Albatron m/b (see my System specs) which fried the PSU ATX 20pin connecter. 5 pins were burnt out. Hence my need to Re-build comp.

This Asus A7N8X m/b is one of 2 that my son gave me to use as replacement.
The other board he gave me is Asus M4A785TD-V EVO which I will use as my main comp. I'm awaiting delivery of an AMD AM3 CPU for it.

When I get this m/b together, it should handle W7/8 OS.
I'm currently using an old comp I built from purchased 2nd hand parts which is running Windows XP Home SP3.

Sorry about the saga, but it should give you a clearer picture of what I'm doing. Neil.

    Got it all working!
I installed XP Pro from CD and halfway through it wanted File i386. So I copied i386 from the CD and burned to a CD.
It installed from there and continued with installation.
I used Ultimate Driver DVD to install necessary drivers and here we are. All systems are go! Neil.:D
