    please someone help !!!!!!!!!!!

i have a a8v deluxe with an amd athlon 3400+ with xp pro that i put together a few years back. at that time 512mb memory seemed okay. times have changed and i brought 3 more 512mb modules based on 4allmemory auto configurer which matched the a8v deluxe board. when i install the memory i get at boot a voice telling me that the cpu is overclocked and it wont go anywhere. i have spent hours literally today trying to figure out what the heck is going on - to no avail. have done everything that other blogs suggest tryin in playing with the bios setting and again to no avail. HELP PLEASE.

what the heck is going on here ??? a simple thing to install more memory and it wont let me. PLEASE AGAIN HELP

I had/have one of those boards and the manual .....

Try going into the BIOS - Advanced > A1 Overclocking and look at the settings. Default is Standard, but options are Auto, Manual, Standard and various degrees of overclocking. Try Manual or Auto.

petec - you say you have this board how much ram do you have in it. says it can take up to 4g. did you have to do anything special ?

actually have tried all those things based on a confused understanding on what to set the variables at. it actually was set to auto. i looked at the bios updates on asus's site and nothing in the description of what they fixed reflected this annoying female voice saying cpu overclocking. even when i just have 2 modules each 512 i get the audio.

any suggestions as to what to set some of those variable to ???

Have is the operative word :) It's in the box in my store cupboard, but checking through my accounts I bought 1 Gb of RAM with the board so it is safe to assume that I ran it with 1 Gb RAM.

You posted that you checked for memory compatability, but I wonder if the info given was wrong. Have you tried just one of the new modules on it's own?

According to the manual a single module should be in B1 - for dual channel identical modules should be in A1 + B1 for 2 modules, all for 4 modules. The manual does speak of using only identical pairs of modules - maybe that is where the problem lies - pairing a new module with the old. Have you tried 2 of the new modules in A1 + B1?

I recall being somewhat confused with the overclocking options - not wishing to overclock and think I used Auto.

I really have no other thoughts to put forward bar resetting the CMOS, which I guess is an option you have already tried.

What did you have previously? Please be very specific.
What did you buy? Again, please be very specific.

I'm not sure I can help and no, I don't know your board. However, I would first follow Pete's instruction using two of the new modules by themselves and reporting back your results. I'll be glad to research this but it sounds like you may have gotten a bum steer from that memory configurator. A lot of people don't realize the subtle differences between seemingly similar memory modules, but they can be quite significant. Most of us have learned this the hard way.

okay original module is a kingston kvr400x64c3a/512 pc3200

new modules are pc3200 512-4018648ddc3 4allmemorys description on my invoice.

what i have now found is when i use the original module with any of the new modules system either hangs or the audio overclocking message happens. i tried using just 2 of the new modules in slots b1 and a1 as per the manual these are blue slots and pow machine starts up right away and does reflect
1g. so and im not sure why but the original module is obviouly not compatible with the new modules. again why i dont know. so i gues my choice now is to either buy 1 more of the new modules so i can have 2g or just keep at 1g.

again not sure why the original module isnt compatible with the new ones. 4allmemory and crucial auto configurator are usually quite good.

I just took a quick look and although sketchy information is all thats available on that 4allmemory site, it appears that you are mixing 32x8 with 64x8 memory. Your Kingston has 16 32x8 chips and it looks like (no picture available) the 64x8 Apple (yes, apple) modules are higher density. Also noticed in the specs that one specs out at 2.5V while the other is 2.6 volts so you may want to try manually setting DIMM voltage to 2.6 and see what happens. I see where you could have purchased more Kingston at $19 each so I hope you got a good deal on what you bought.

Many will argue but I never try to mix and match different memory. Buying another stick of that Apple memory is certainly one way to go. Can I assume that your new memory is single sided compared to your double sided Kingston? Mixing SIMMs and DIMMs is always a no-no but sometimes will work.

    ;)

rockster2u - am surprised these new ones are apple but they work and thats all i care about. guess i will call 4allmemory and order just 1 more of and i will stress to them it has to be exactly the same module.

sometime ago i ordered thru newegg the exact same sku that the original kingston was at the price you mention and it didnt work. machine wouldnt boot at all. the original kingston is a double sided and the one they sent me was single sided even tho it was the exact same sku. fortunately was able to put in a clients machine and it worked so i lost nothing.

got the new modules for 26.00 per.

the new modules are double sided as was the original kingston.

ive ordered a ton of memory from 4allmemory and never have had problems. there reseller rating is 5 stars and they dont charge for shipping or state taxes. crucial is pretty good also and at times i do order from them but to be safe i need to get another module for this machine from 4allmemory so i can be assured its exactly the same chip.

thanks guys. as always your great.....greg
