All of a sudden I had a new user account called ASP.NET. This causes me to have to log in each time I turn on the computer. This just started.
I looked in the add/remove and see:
Microsoft .NET framework 1.1 with no file size listed to the right
Microsoft .NET framework 1.1 hotfix with no file size to the right
Microsoft .NET framework 2.0 with a file size listed to the right

Can I remove thr user account ASP.NET or will this mess things up?
How do I get back to not having to log in to my computer.?
I didn't install any of this as I have no idea what it does or why its their. This goes for 1.1 and 2.0.
I am just a home user.
Sat. everything was fine and Sun. this log in mess started.
    What happened?

I don't understand the delay you describe because the problem is with Microsoft .NET Framework Version 1.1 which creates the user account resulting in the login dialog. The login dialog has appeared immediately on the next reboot after installation of Microsoft .NET Framework Version 1.1 on each occasion I have installed it. The problem was corrected in the first service pack for Microsoft .NET Framework Version 1.1 and on each occasion did the login dialog go away.

There are two updates to Microsoft .NET Framework Version 1.1 which are labeled "high priority ":

    NDP1.1sp1-KB867460-X86.exe (which is SP1)
    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/867460/en-us and
NDP1.1sp1-KB886903-X86.exe (which is a vulnerability patch)
    http://www.microsoft.com/technet/security/bulletin/ms05-004.mspx

If that is KB886903 you have to uninstall it first. If you don't, KB867460 will not install correctly (see the first link above).

As a side note, the different versions of Microsoft .NET Framework are not connected. Version 2 does not replace version 1.1. Version 2 does not make SP1 for version 1.1 superfluous.

    Edited:

It is possible that 1.1 and/or 2.0 was installed by a program that requires the repsective version to run. An example is Norton Ghost 9 and later. You should have been notified, though.

What would happen if I deleted version 2.0. That would still leave 1.1. You might be right that another program had this installed for their purpose. Everything I have read is about 1.1 and a fix for that program. I haven't seen anything about a fix for 2.0. Not really sure if 2.0 is causing the problem by creating a user account.

The login issue has, as far as I know, nothing to do with version 2. If version 2 only is installed, you won't get the login screen. If version 1.1 only is installed, you will get the login screen unless you install SP1 for version 1.1.

A programmer may have written his code to use version 1.1 only, version 2 only or both in combination. Since you don't know when, what or why, I recommend playing it safe and leave both versions installed but to install the updates in my previous post in the correct order.

Once SP1 for version 1.1 is installed, you won't even notice they are there but if you unistall any of them, you may notice that the should have been left alone when you try to run the program that had either or both versions installed.

all upgrades are installed but still have a user account asp.net.
what would happen if I deleted the user account? I think I have the option to save it before deleting it.

I don't have any version installed on this computer and have no way to check if the asp.net account is still there with SP1 for version 1.1 installed.

When I installed version 1.1, I did get the login dialog and when I installed SP1 (KB867460) it went away without deleting anything manually.

It would probably not hurt to uninstall those two, in reverse order. If you at a later time should be notified that version 1.1 is missing and needed, just reinstall it (and don't forget the updates in the correct order).

You'll only have problems if you do ASP.net development.

What would happen if I deleted everything. 1.0, 1.1, and 2.0 and started with a clean slate. Then just installed 2.0 or 3.0. From what I have read 2.0 doesn't have this problem. (user account)

This is the first mention of version 1.0 but apart from that, it is more or less what I suggested in post #10. Uninstalling everything should take you back to square one and hopefully rid your system of the login dialog. If successful, I would open my programs, one by one, to find out which one requires which version of .NET Framework. (The program will not work but you will be prompted to install the required version of .NET Framework.) I would reinstall as required and if version 1.1 should be required, I would also immediately install the two updates in the correct order as well.

Please, notice the highlighted Uninstalling because it has to be done through Add/Remove. Just deleting the files will make a mess of things.

If you have programs that require .NET framework 1.0 or 1.1 they would no longer work. The framework versions are usually not compatible (i.e. a program written to work with version 1.0 won't work with version 1.1 or 2.0).

I guess the bottom line is I got what I got and thats the storie. I have used this compuer for several years without a logon icon. Why it changed all of a sudden I do not know but looks like that is how its going to be. I can live with this as its not a disaster. Sometimes I just wonder who has control, me or the computer!! I think ASP.NET has shown me who is in control this time.
Thanks for all the help. It was an education for me.
Sometimes I get into more trouble trying to figure out why it does what it does.
