got nailed by asafetylist or at least that's what it says.

can't use the www so am working from a laptop.

I ran hijackthis and got a list but don't know ho to send it other than to type it here.

got lots of 023, 016, a couple of 9's etc..

ran the download tool and it shows tons of bad things, but the system locks b4 I can clean it

I was a bad boy! While I was waiting for a reply, I read another post about spylocked, which is what I was having trouble with. Since I already had hijack this and the smithfraud fix, I did what the instructions said.

Evidently, although things didn’t go exactly as indicated, something got fixed because I can now use my OLE and IE. At least that’s some progress.

However, I still have the darn spylocked blinking cursor on my toolbar, and my system still won’t complete a scan, so there’s still something wrong.

I wish I knew why I get a system lock on nearly anything that tries to scan the drives.

I think I can get a smithfraud list, but almost everything else, locks it up. I can run adaware, but not Norton, panda or most others.

I can supply you with anything, but the programs have to finish first.

The following is all I can do right now. any Ideas are very much appreciated.

Try renaming Hijackthis.exe to Killer.exe then try to run HJT, if you get a log post it here.

There is nothing showing in the HJT log

Let's see if we can get a log that will dig a little deeper.

Please RIGHT-CLICK HERE and Save As (in IE it's "Save Target As ", in FF it's "Save Link As ") to download Silent Runners.

• Save it to the desktop.
• Run Silent Runner's by doubleclicking the "Silent Runners" icon on your desktop.
• You will receive a prompt:
  • Do you want to skip supplementary searches?
    click NO
• If you receive an error just click OK and double-click it to run it again - sometimes it won't run as it's supposed to the first time but will in subsequent runs.
• You will see a text file appear on the desktop - it's not done, let it run (it won't appear to be doing anything!)
• Once you receive the prompt All Done!, open the text file on the desktop, copy that entire log, and paste it here.

*NOTE* If you receive any warning message about scripts, please choose to allow the script to run.

Well, I didn’t get an all done, but I was watching it grow in the explorer, and it stopped growing, so I went and looked. If its still running, I’ll send it along again later.

BTW, just a curious question. Is there any way to turn off Norton GOBACK without screwing systemworks Up?

Lets run the first part of Smitfraund again, I would like to see if anything shows up. Let's make sure you downloaded the newest version, Please delete the one you downloaded and download this one.

Please download SmitfraudFix (by S!Ri) to your Desktop.

Double-click SmitfraudFix.exe
Select option #1 - Search by typing 1 and press "Enter "; a text file will appear, which lists infected files (if present).
Please copy/paste the content of that report into your next reply.

**If the tool fails to launch from the Desktop, please move SmitfraudFix.exe directly to the root of the system drive (usually C:), and launch from there.


Note : process.exe is detected by some antivirus programs (AntiVir, Dr.Web, Kaspersky) as a "RiskTool "; it is not a virus, but a program used to stop system processes. Antivirus programs cannot distinguish between "good" and "malicious" use of such programs, therefore they may alert the user.

OK This next.

You should print out these instructions, or copy them to a NotePad file for reading while in Safe Mode, because you will not be able to connect to the Internet to read from this site.

Next, please reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following :

• Restart your computer
• After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, tap the F8 key continually;
• Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu with options should appear;
• Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode, then press "Enter ".
• Choose your usual account.

Once in Safe Mode, double-click on SmitfraudFix.exe
Select option #2 - Clean by typing 2 and press "Enter" to delete infected files.

You will be prompted : "Registry cleaning - Do you want to clean the registry ? "; answer "Yes" by typing Y and press "Enter" in order to remove the Desktop background and clean registry keys associated with the infection.

The tool will now check if wininet.dll is infected. You may be prompted to replace the infected file (if found); answer "Yes" by typing Y and press "Enter ".

The tool may need to restart your computer to finish the cleaning process; if it doesn't, please restart it into Normal Windows.
A text file will appear onscreen, with results from the cleaning process; please copy/paste the content of that report into your next reply.
The report can also be found at the root of the system drive, usually at C:\rapport.txt

Warning : running option #2 on a non infected computer will remove your Desktop background.

Also please let me know if the icon is gone after running the fix.

Well. I tried!

I told it to clean, but it threw up an error message from the registry editor "“ Cannot import cleanup.reg "“ Error accessing the registry.

Then the system locked and I had to reset it.

I did see that it had deleted something, so I’ll try to see if any report generated.

The report follows.

When I restarted the box in the "normal" mode, the desktop background was gone, and the default browser reverted to MSN.com in the IE. It let me re-establish my background, and put google back up as my default.

I gotta tell ya, I truly appreciate all your time and help, but I’ve been up since 2AM this mornings and I’m ready to drop dead! I’ve gott get some shuteye, but I’ll be back as soon as I get up in the morning, so don’t leave me! ;-)

It should not have deleted your backround, that only happens if you were not infected, and you were.

I'll see what I can find out about this.

That’s when the machine locked up. I got some kind of message about it checking to see ho much disk space could be saved, then I told it you clean, and that’s when it locked up.

I sure hope you have some luck. This whole thing with the machine locking up has really turned into a pain in the posterior. I went years after I went to 2000, and never once had a system problem. then a few months back, this **** started, and its been happening ever since.

Get some shuteye, I'm not going anywhere.

So can you tell me if the icon is now gone?

Also reboot your computer to see if it still locks up at reboot.

If you’re talking about the smitfraud icon, its still there.

Another bad on my part. I didn’t mean to give you the impression the lock-up occurred at startup. That’s always been fine. The lockup occurred while SF was running.

We have just a few more things to do, mostly maintenance and then our recommendations:

Delete all your cookies, and empty your recycle bin. But remember, by deleting your cookies, you will have to re-enter any passwords and log-in info for any sites you are usually required to do so with.

This would also be a good time to set a new system restore point for your machine.
Set New System Restore Point. Do not do this unless there are no other user accounts to be diagnosed.

Also, as you are an XP user, if there are any other accounts on this machine, they too, must be cleaned with AdAware, Spybot S&D, then HJT. Not all infections are global, nor are all the HJT fixes global. You can post each user account here into this thread, but please, do only one at a time to avoid confusion. It is very rare that anything significant is ever found.

The following is a list of tools and utilities that I like to suggest to people. This list is full of great tools and utilities to help you understand how you got infected and how to keep from getting infected again.

1. Spybot Search & Destroy - Uber powerful tool which can search and annhilate nasties that make it onto your system. Now with an Immunize section that will help prevent future infections.
   
   
2. AdAware - Another very powerful tool which searches and kills nasties that infect your system. AdAware and Spybot Search & Destroy compliment each other very well.
   
   
3. SpywareBlaster - Great prevention tool to keep nasties from installing on your system.
   
   
4. SpywareGuard - Works as a Spyware "Shield" to protect your computer from getting malware in the first place.
   
   
5. IE-SpyAd - puts over 23,000 sites in your restricted zone so you'll be protected when you visit innocent-looking sites that aren't actually innocent at all,
   and MVPS Hosts File will accomplish a similar tactic and provide another layer of protection.
   
   
6. Install WinPatrol to prevent unknown applications from being inserted to start up on your machine
   
   Now just because you have security apps installed, they are useless unless updated regularly.
   
   
7. Another thing I would suggest, is to install SiteAdvisor. It gives sites a few different 'ratings' and while not fool proof, a good additional layer of information about many sites.
   
   
8. ATF Cleaner by Atribune.
   This program is for XP and Windows 2000 only, Cleans out temporary files all the garbage you collect while surfing the web.
   
   
9. Windows Updates - It is very important to make sure that both Internet Explorer and Windows are kept current with the latest critical security patches from Microsoft. To do this just start Internet Explorer and select Tools > Windows Update, and follow the online instructions from there.
   
   
10. Google Toolbar - Free google toolbar that allows you to use the powerful Google search engine from the bar, but also blocks pop up windows.
    
11. Trillian or Miranda-IM - These are Malware free Instant Messenger programs which allow you to connect to multiple IM services in one program! (AOL, Yahoo, ICQ, IRC, MSN)

Not all infections are global, nor are all the HJT fixes global. You can post each user account here into this thread, but please, do only one at a time to avoid confusion. It is very rare that anything significant is ever found.

     If you ever find anything about how to get rid of or stop Norton GOBACK, I’d sure appreciate it.
     
     Also, if you come across anything that gives me a hint about why my system locks up, I’d appreciate that too.
     
     I’d truly like to be able to scan the system, but since it also locks up at other strange times, I don’t know that its necessarily something that isn’t hardware related.
     
     I’ve seen it lock up when the machine was idle, or rather no applications running.
     
     Can I assume that I don’t really need to waste money on Norton if I get, install, and use the software on the list you’ve provided?

That is hard to say, I know that when I used windows98 it was prone to do that and I had to reboot, I'm not so sure on a windows2K machine.
When was the last time you defraged and run a checkdisk?
This may or may not help. couldn't hurt tho.

Not necessarily, You NEED Anti-Virus and firewall protection, There are many good ones out there. Some are even free.
Some people don't like Norton or McAfee because of the resources that take up to run. (I am one of them) and Norton "could" be causing your lock up problem. or it could be something else. This is really a personal decision on how well you like Norton or not.

Search the forms for Virus programs and you will get many hits here.
