Windows Vista Arie's response made me think!

In the Getting Access Denied Messages When Accessing Folder thread I posted the following, (abridged for simplicity)

For example:
C:\Users\[username]\AppData\ was accessible with no issue.
and
c:\Users\[username]\Application Data\ was NOT accessible.

Checking via the 'Properties' link led me to ... the 'Advanced Security Settings' page [where] there is a list current permissions ... showing, as the first entry 'Deny Everyone' ...

Arie replied

That is because \Users\[username]\Application Data\ is not a folder, it is a junction point that 're-directs' to \Users\[username]\AppData\.
I don't know why people insist in accessing these 'folders' which aren't even showing by default (since they are 'hidden' folders).

After a period of mature reflection I realise that Arie was quite correct and I thank him for his response. Having taken note, and before I hide those files, would it be a good idea to reintroduce those restrictive permissions?

For the record I had changed the permissions in Application Data, Desktop, Documents, Favorites, Start Menu, Templates.
by removing the line:
Deny -- Everyone -- List folder / read data -- <not inherited> -- This folder only

Yes, I think you should revert to the default security settings.

Thanks Arie.

OK, I admit it! I should never have changed the Deny ... permissions in the first place, but, is there a simple way to reinstate them before I hide the files, or does it really matter that much?

I did actually try hiding the files as an initial step but those files seem to be still available, presumably due the removal of the Deny ... line.

Clearly, with the benefit of hindsight, of course, I should not have messed around. No harm appears to have been done, but, now , I just wonder .....

AFAIK there's no other way than to manually re-create them. Add the Everyone group & Deny for List folder / read data, Apply To should be set to This folder only.
