Do you run Anti-Virus software? I’m sure not all are listed as options on this poll, there are just too many, but the most popular are listed. If yours is not, just select the "Other" option, and post which software you are using.

There is a new one out from Sunbelt called Vipre that seems to be pretty decent.

I was using Avast but recently swithcked to Avira. It has done a good job, has fairly fast scans and real time protection.

Kaspersky here. Found it while searching for "the best "... I don't like the GUI of NOD32 and AVG at all, although i'm sure they are great antivirus systems. I found Kaspersky to have a extremely high rate of detection, very low amount of false positives, with a great GUI and customizability to boot. Sold :D

It's unfortunate that we have this many votes for Norton so far. If there's ever an AntiVirus program that doesn't deserve this name, Norton is it. I've seen 3 catastrophic HDD failures (i.e. the MFT and Boot Sector scrambled, and/or all data wiped) caused by viruses while Norton was installed and running AutoProtect Mode. Also, a friend of mine got a second-hand laptop, that had an up-to-date version of what was at the time, the most recent Norton iteration (was v2005 I believe) and it would pop up little windows every 1 second (no joke) saying it had scanned an outgoing email, and nothing was detected. As you probably already guessed, this laptop had been compromised and was being used to essentially host a SPAM server. Norton had no idea.

I have been using Avast for about a year and a half now. I use to use AVG for quite a few years before that but switched to Avast. Both have always worked quite nicely for me with no problems.

    I support 45 clients in 5 states.

Each of the clients run either Windows 2000 Server or 2003 Server and in a couple of small offices XP as acting File server for 2-5 workstations the acting server as all the above are used to run a centralized database. Several of the Servers are Terminal Servers. Additionally some of these offices run 2 Servers with one being a dedicated Terminal Server.

My clients have a combination of the below Virus scanners.

So to support these via a combination of RDP and VNC I work daily in front of 4 screens. Three are XP SP3 one is Win2K Pro.

In order to evaluate the capabilities of each of the below Virus Scanners and be familiar with how, and how well they work I run a different one on each of my own stations.

For many years back to ver 6 AVG was my top pick.

I totally dropped AVG at ver 8 after giving them time to fix their issues because they now have become Norton/Symantec wanabes!

Below listed in order of my favorites.

    1. Comodo Antivirus. On the Win2k with Comodo Firewall. Solid and Fast! NOTHING has gotten by this combo!

    2. ThreatFire (XP Station 1) with Protection Level set to Maximum. Was very wordy at first until I approved all my programs. After that if it pops up you better pay attention because it has likely caught something.

I am very impressed with ThreatFire.

    3. Avast (XP Station 2).

    4. Avira (XP Station 3).

Note for anyone supporting a Server. Both Comodo and ThreatFire Antivirus are about the only ones I know that can be installed on Server and they run lightly and fast. Comodo and ThreatFire will run efficently as a team with hardly any impact on performance.

I am running ZoneAlarm AntiVirus (V8) on Windows Vista. It utilizes the Kaspersky engine.

While I do not feel I need AV nor AS software per se, I did want the Program Control feature of ZoneAlarm and that feature is not present in the free version of ZA. So, ZAAV was the least cost version of ZoneAlarm. At the time, the ZA Suite for Vista was missing a number of features that were present in the version of the Suite for XP as well. This discrepancy has been corrected with the release of V8 I believe. I did run the ZA Suite when I ran XP.

CA user for years, but don't like the now integrated with Internet Security Suite only version, so it's running on only one machine currently. Kaspersky on another machine, which is an awesome package (put it on my company's network too). Nod32 still running on a third machine at this time. I would have to say that come renewal time, this household will be all Kaspersky.

I m using Kaspersky AV at the moment.I used AVG/Avast but to me their detection is not good compared to Kaspersky.

Recently i ve read some very good independent AV research reports and seems Avira is doing really good these days.

    Anti Virus Software

I am using Avast 4.8, Home Edition which is free.

If you care to look at an AntiVirus Test Report produced and published:eek: in PC Answers, dated May 2007. it does a comparison on Seven (7) individual packages. Avast was the best free one with Kapersky being the winner.

    Makes very interesting reading
