I need to put a shortcut in the root directory of a CD that points to a file buried elsewhere on the CD. However, the shortcut needs to work regardless of the drive letter assigned to the CD-ROM.

I can't get Windows to accept anything but a full path name as a shortcut target, and when the CD is used on a differently configured machine, the link doesn't work.

Is there a way to do a relative reference as a shortcut target?

Make your shortcut point to a batch file that steps thru each drive letter above C: and looks for a particular file (and give it a really strange name to avoid accidental duplicates).

If file not found, try next letter.

If file found, feed drive letter as a variable at the beginning of a path statement and proceed.

Thanks. I was so focused on a shortcut that a batch file didn't even occur to me. I can redirect using a batch file instead of a shortcut and the drive letter won't be a consiferation.
