Hope that this is the correct forum anyway here goes.

I have an application (Garmin Mapsource) installed on my system (XP Pro) which until a few days ago worked correctly and had been doing so for months.
Now whenever I attempt to run it (double left mouse click on the desktop icon) the mouse pointer turns to the usual hourglass for a fraction of a second (blink of an eye) then returns to the normal pointer and the application does NOT start up. Also there are NO error messages displayed.
I have uninstalled the application and reinstalled without any improvement.
I purchased this software (actually came with my Garmin GPS unit).

I noted that since the application last ran successfully I had installed AdAware and also an upgrade to Mozilla Firefox. I tried uninstalling AdAware but it made no difference.

What can I do to attempt to find what is causing the application not to work? Is there a 'debug' application which will log everything an application does when it is run (eg what .dll files are loaded and in what order etc).

    Any suggestions.

I have contacted Garmin but so far no response from them.

Is there anything showing up in the event viewer?

Log in with an administrator account and...

    Start->Run->eventvwr.exe

Look in Application and System for entries.

When I looked in eventvwr.exe there were NO entries in either the System or Application tab - sorry there were entries but they were all date stamped with a date/time much earlier than the time I attempted to run Mapsource.

I then attempted to run this application by right clicking on the icon then selecting RUN AS. I left Current User selected and Protect My Computer and data from unauthorized program activity ticked. A window opened stating the following -
    Runtime error
    Program C:\Garmin\Mapsource.exe
This application has requested the Runtime to terminate it in an unusual way.
Please contact the application's support team for more information.

If I do the same and untick Protect my computer... the window does not open then the error message (window) does not open.

Once again I have attempted to contact Garmin via their website with no reply.

    Where to now?

It probably doesn't help but I installed this application on my 'standby' PC which is quite old but also has XP Pro installed and it works on that PC. I really don't want to run it on that old PC.

As a test try running it in safe mode.

    Well everything started to happen.
I decided to RESTORE my PC to an earlier date (when MapSource was working) to see if it still worked after restore. Well it did start up but displayed some error message saying that it needed reinstalling.
I then tried to reverse the RESTORE back to latest and that's when everything went belly up. After that every time Windows tried to start up my PC just rebooted. I tried a Windows REPAIR without any success.
After wasting too much time I decided to do a reformat and reinstall Windows and everything.
I am still in the middle of that reinstall so don't know yet if MapSource will run but I am guessing that it will.
But right now after doing a fresh Windows install and also installing all the chipset drivers which came with my motherboard (purchased 6 months ago) there is NO SOUND. I have checked DEVICE MANAGER for SOUND and everything looks ok.
I have NO IDEA where to go to solve the no sound problem. I have tried 'ADD NEW HARDWARE' but that finds nothing.
