Intel Core i5-3470 CPU @ 3.20GHz, 8,0GB RAM, Intel HD Graphics, MS Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit SP1
I have Kaspersky Internet Security 2014, and I have Google Talk, Skype, and Memeo Backup Premium Pro running in the background.

During a day's work I will get several occasions when my machine refuses to do anything. Clicking hither and yon usually stirs up a response dialog which tells me that Microsoft Word is not responding or Internet Explorer is not responding or Multiflimminate Gunge-nurgler is not responding or whatever. The end of it all is that I wait, and wait, and wait ... and occasionally what-ever-it-is starts responding again.

Sometimes I conjure up a response that tells me that Windows is trying to find a reason for the lack of response. If this ever achieves anything, it is only to tell me to re-boot my machine.

What could be causing this annoyance, and how do I fix it?

I don't know what you are trying to say, TonyT. This problem did not occur under XP, so I have associated it with W7 - hence posting in the W7 forum.

Are you trying to say something like, "I think this problem is probably caused by Malware of some sort. It cannot possibly be Windows 7 because Microsoft never make mistakes like this.:) You would, IMHO, be better off posting this message in the Manlware and Virus Removal forum. "

FTR: I ran MalwareBytes on all discs last Sunday and received a clean report. That's another reason I suspect W7 and not Malware.

Malware Bytes is not the only program that should be run. It like other programs don't find everything. If it did, the one with the most $$$ would wipe the other ones out. Doesn't take long to post in the Malware section and Broni is good at what he does. All it takes is one slip at the wrong site or a drive by to make your PC do goofy things.

But it is your choice. Just a suggestion on my part and probably TonyT also.

    Methinks you misunderstand.

I am asking why you think it's a malware problem. I am looking at a misfunction of a Windows program on a Windows O/S which has shown itself to me to be, at best, erratic and unpredictable. I have my reasons for thinking it is an O/S problem which is why I posted here. You have concluded that it is a Malware problem, and I would like to know why.

I will organize posting those reports you suggested after my day's work is done.

I haven't concluded that it was a Malware/Spyware/Virus problem. I was just suggesting as TonyT did to make sure that you are clean. Just because it is a MS program doesn't make it any safer than anything else.

TonyT and I may be out in left field when we should be playing bench warmers. :D

It is your choice as if you want to do this or not.

Okay - I get the idea.
As I said, I will do that a bit later today.

    Thanks

I should have included this in my response:
    Your system specs are good.
In a majority of cases such behavior is caused by malware, spyware, adware and other potentially unwanted programs.

System Clean but still applications stall

I have Kaspersky Internet Security 2014, and I have Google Talk, Skype, and Memeo Backup Premium Pro running in the background.

I posted this query some time ago. Since then I have been doing a zillion malware checks through the Malware forum. My machine has been pronounced clean. However, the problem persists.

Can anyone suggest what is causing this?

I've seen similar behavior caused by:

    1. Windows Update installing stuff in the background.
    2. Antivirus scanning.
    3. Other scheduled tasks.
    4. Bad RAM.
    5. Failing hard drive.

    Hi Tony

    1. My updates are all up-to-date.
    2. I am loath to connect to the Internet with Kaspersky turned off.
    3. Memeo Premium Backup is a Serial Pest, but I don't think it is entirely responsible for this.
    4. Memory Diagnostics Tool can't find anything to howl about.
    5. CHKDSK a couple of days ago came up blank.

I just booted after the MDT run, and waited so long for MS Outlook and IE11 to be "Not Responding " that I gave up, killed them with Task Manager and started the again.

An interesting questions is, "Does anyone else have the same problem? " I gave up being paranoid when I discovered that they all WERE out to get me, but I often wonder if problems like this only happen to me

Does the lockup only occur with IE and Outlook?

Can you recall when this first began happening? It's possible an MS update got installed and is causing it. Or a driver update.

Check the event viewer: control panel > admin tools > event viewer. Clear all logs. Next time it happens let's see what's in the logs. Clearing the existing logs will make it easier to locate the recorded problem.

    Hi Tony

This Not Responding thing is an ongoing problem. It goes back months. It's getting worse. This morning was the worst dose for a while.

There are a zillion and three logs listed and no way in Event Viewer to delete them - not that I found, anyway. I can find everything with ".LOG" and delete it. Is that what you want me to do?

The IE log (64KB) has no entries.

Here are some data I gathered.

In a new twist, for that past two or three days Adobe has been interrupting proceedings by asking permission to change files. Two or three times at once. Two or three times a day. Even when I'm not using Adobe Reader!

Another thought. I spotted something about Windows Backup while zooming round in Event Viewer. I DID try to set that up a while ago because Memeo was giving me a pain in the proverbial. Turned out to be in the Too Hard basket so I gave up. Could it still be trying to work, and interfering with everything else. How do I kill it?

Rick, presuming you have CCleaner installed, you can tick the checkbox under Advanced > Windows Event Logs, and it should delete those old logs for you.

To clear the logs in Event Viewer:
    1. Expand Windows Logs in left pane.
    2. Right click each and select Clear log.
    Application
    Security
    System
    Forwarded Events

    No need to clear Setup.

Problem persists. This morning IE11 and Outlook stalled for so long I gave up and killed them with Task Manager. They behaved better when recalled.

Which Event Logs would you like to see, and how do I open them?

Critical events are the ones that may give a clue to the cause of the problem.
