I have been running XP Pro for some time, without unusual problems, however I have recently been installing and fidgeting with WiFi, and Bluetooth for a wireless headset (all successfully), but possibly coincidentally, when Booting the system now, (every time, either from shutdown or restart) I get an Explorer.exe error message displayed during loading of the Taskbar and system tray.

The contents of the message are: [Application Error] - [The instruction at 0x66006041 referenced memory at 0x66006041. The memory could not be "read ".] - [OK to terminate] - [Cancel to Debug].

If I use Task Manager to kill Explorer.exe, and run a new task to restart explorer, it loads and runs OK, other than not loading the system tray completely (which rarely happens anyhow)

I have run MS WINDIAG memory test diagnostic, which shows 100% good hardware memory. Also, when booting in msconfig diagnostic mode, the same thing occurs.

How does one determine if the error message is valid... I have not before seen an instruction that refers to its own location before, and am wondering if the problem is software rather than hardware.

I will greatly apreciate any information/advice towards resolving this problem.

    TIA,

    Roger Blair

    Hi,

    Welcome to the WindowsBBS!

Many times, Explorer errors are caused by 3rd party shell extensions that are not functioning properly.. Start here to troubleshoot: Troubleshooting Windows Explorer Errors

Thanks for the reply Arie, please note that the error is generated during startup in diagnostic mode during explorer loading, with no user input possible.

Can a shell extension even be involved at that point?

The Explorer Errors link you provided, do not address boot processes, only user action generated errors, that I could find.

    Thanks,

    Roger

AFAIK yes. I'd at least look into it.
