Hello all, before I begin I want to direct you to this link, http://www.windowsbbs.com/windows-xp/72491-application-error.html, which is a similar problem to what I am facing and is the reason I am posting on this forum for help with resolution. I would have just continued that thread, but the thread is over 2 years old now and does not allow for new posts. I did do some more searching here but found nothing quite as exact as this for my problem, hopefully I didn't just overlook it, and hopefully lightning will strike twice with solving this problem!

Now, on to the issue I'm facing. The system is Windows Server 2003 Terminal Server, and the application in question is jaucheck.exe. Occasionally I will get an application error related to this application. The message reads:

    jaucheck.exe - Application Error

The exception unknown software exception (0x0000005) occured in the application at location 0x0040c940

Click OK to terminate the program
Click Cancel to debug the program

*Either option closes the warning window*

I've done enough research to know that this is related to java automatic update checks, and have taken steps to disable automatic updates for java to try and resolve the issue, without success. I have also uninstalled and re-installed java, and confirmed that the version is the recommended version for this OS.

My problem does differ from the link I mentioned earlier in that both the (0x0000005) and 0x0040c940 locations are constant through my error messages. These messages occur seemingly randomly, but does have eventlog information to accompany them.

I have not done any work with trying to use Kaspersky Online Scanner or HiJack this, as I'm fairly new to these services and this is a production machine. If the log files from these would assist further, I'll be happy to try and run through them to get whatever information is needed.

    Any ideas?

What is the contents of the file C:\Documents and Settings\YourUserName\Local Settings\Temp\AUCHECK_MAP_XX.xml ? Does it look like a valid xml file?

I looked in the directory you mentioned, but did not see any .xml file(s). Since this is a terminal server, part of my initial troubleshooting was to see if this was something affecting only a single user, or all users. It seems that the errors are spread out amongst all of the users, at different times.

I saw the same exception 0x0000005 at location 0x0040c940. Looking through the code with my ida I noticed that jaucheck.exe tries to parse this AUCHECK_MAP_41.xml, fails to do this and prints some logs to C:\Documents and Settings\YourUserName\Local Settings\Temp\AUCHECK_CORE.txt and C:\Documents and Settings\YourUserName\Local Settings\Temp\AUCHECK_PARSER.txt
I simply replaced my AUCHECK_MAP_41.xml with this one http://javadl-esd.sun.com/update/1.6.0/map-1.6.0.xml and fixed the problem.

Nice, thanks! I'll give this a try. When you say replaced, you mean that you renamed the map-1.6.0.xml as AUCHECK_MAP_41.xml or did you delete the AUCHECK_MAP_41.xml and instead just have map-1.6.0 in the c:\documents and settings\...\Temp\ directory?

    Sure, I renamed map-1.6.0.xml as AUCHECK_MAP_41.xml i.e. copied the data from map-1.6.0.xml to c:\documents and settings\...\Temp\AUCHECK_MAP_41.xml

I did a windows search on the Terminal server and can find no AUCHECK_MAP_41.xml, so I made an .xml file using the content of the map-1.6.0.xml, and placed it in the local settings directory on some of the users experiencing the error messages.

Since this is a terminal server, is there a location that could be used to provide this fix for all users?

    Errors Continue

I'm still getting these errors, across multiple users at different times during the day. As I mentioned, I've put the XML file into the proper location on the various users affected, but there has been no change.

    Anyone have any further ideas?
