Hello, I recently had to reinstall windows and I need to change several of my shell folders to a different partition. On my previous installation this was no problem; I just went in to HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Shell Folders and changed the AppData path to point to the place where I want it, but with this installation every time I change it it changes back again on its own the next time I either open a program, log on or reboot.

Why is it doing this? It didnt do it before so why is it doing it now? What on earth is changing it back and how can I prevent it?

TweakUI is no help as there is no option to change the application data shell folder.

After you made the reg tweak did you physically move the folders to the new location?

The problem is, I cant do that. I will explain exactly what it is I am doing. I have dual boot with XP on C: vista on D: and Program Files and My Documents on E:

I edit my registy so that I share all application data and such with both XP and Vista so that if I change my wallpaper in XP when I boot into Vista it also has the same wallpaper, if I save a game in Vista the same saved games are there in XP and so on. It works really well.

But vista has a different name for its Application Data folder as it calls it AppData. So, I cant actually move Applicaiont Data because even it I did it wouldnt have the right name; I need everything to be in AppData folder on my E: partition.

I GOT IT FOOLED!!! =))))) I will explain how I did it in case anyone else should find this thread who has a similar problem (and because I just know that Im gonna reinstall windows in about 9 months and have this same **** problem myself once again :D)

I booted in to Vista and renamed the Application Data folder to something else then booted back into XP. It recreated the folder only this time it was a normal folder that could be renamed, so I renamed Vistas AppData folder to AppData1 then I renamed the new empty Application Data folder to AppData as I wanted it and I logged off and back on. The registry updated with the new folder name 'AppData' correctly! :)

So then then I just copied all the contents of AppData1 and the original Application Data folder into AppData and now all is good.
