I notice I have a number of the following files on my system. They seem to be some form of temporary file i.e. cache. Can these types of files be deleted without a problem?
These are opened with explorer. While note most are like the one below some have a box which comes up and says it is a program that needs to be opened with the usual warning. Can these types also be deleted?

    C:\WINDOWS\Application Data\Mozilla\Profiles\Mervin\htprcr03.slt\Cache\95E8D7BFd01

    Hi hollinm,

You can delete the entire Cache folder. It will be rebuilt when you restart Netscape. Ensure that both Netscape and Quick Launch are closed before editing.

Also see this sticky, which is located at the top of the Forum:
    Preventive Browser Maintenance

This will give you information on what you can and should delete at the end of your online session. Following the guideline will give you premium performance from your browser.

Reviewed the sticky. I am inexperienced so want to make sure I understand what I am doing.

when I went to start>find>*.slt found the following:

    htprcr03.slt
    rxjekizn.slt
    rxjekizn.slt-new

Each one appeared to have the Cache folder, history.dat and xul.mfl files.

Do I delete the contents of the cache folder and the files for each of the above.

When it says to make sure Quick Launch is closed. How do I do that. I know how to close the browser.

When I compact the folders in the mail and newsgroup, what changes should I see?

How do I find out the location of my Profiles folder? I see a number of them on my system when I go start>find>profiles. Then how do I back them up.

    Hi hollinm,
Yes, delete the entire Cache folder, and the two files: history.dat and XUL.mfl for each Profile.
Click on Edit | Preferences | Advanced
In the right pane, ensure that Quick Launch is not enabled. If there is a check mark, then click on the check mark to remove it. There would be a Mozilla icon in the system tray if you have Quick Launch enabled.
When you check your Mail Account folder, you will see that the Inbox, Sent, etc., files are smaller than before compacting. Compacting compresses the Mail files.
    See: Profiles Folder Location

    To back up your Profiles:
Close Mozilla and Quick Launch (if enabled)
    Open Windows Explorer
Create a backup folder on your C: drive. Name it whatever you want (let me know if you don't know how)
    Navigate to your Profiles folder
    <path>\Application Data\Mozilla\Profiles
    Right click the Profiles folder
    Click on "Copy "

    Next:
Right click on the newly created backup folder
    Click on "Paste "

Now you have a backup copy of all three of your Profiles.

Thank you for laying out your instructions so clearly. I was able to follow and have now carried out your suggestions. By the way I was able to find c: and create new back up folder for my profiles.
I use outlook express express 6. It looks like some of the instructions applied to netscape. Right? However I did delete contents of cache folder and deleted the history and XUL in each of the salt folders.
    What does mozilla refer to?

Once again thank you for all your help. Your instructions will help keep the system as efficient as possible.

    Thanks. :D
