I am in the process of buying another laptop and wanted to get opinions on the Apple vs Windows PC. I do not do any composing, etc, just normal internet, spread sheets, word documents, etc.

Can anyone give me advice on which is better for my activities. Also, what is the consensus for the best brand?

Hi elaine. My opinion on this would to go with a Windows PC. They tend to be much cheaper than their MAC counterparts. Plus if you go with a Windows labtop you get a lot more options with what kinds of hardware you want to have in the labtop.

With getting a MAC labtop there are only about 3 choices that you can really chose from. If all you are doing is word processing, spread sheets and Internet browsing then go for a Windows labtop.

As far as brands go I've heard good things about HP, Toshiba, and Lenovo.

For more information about PC's vs MAC's take a look at this link, MAC vs PC.

Adding from Evans advice I'd avoid HP, I doubt they'd abandon their current customers but they are pulling out of the market. Best to stick with someone who's going to be around for assistance if/when you need it.

Otherwise as Evan has posted for your mediocre needs a windows system would be better value for money.

    re HP

It's not definite they're pulling out of the pc market. HP recently got a new CEO and is continuing her predecessor's policies except for getting out of the pc market. They are evaluating whether or not to keep it going & I believe they will keep it.

Personally, I always recommend Dell laptops, the business models.

They are not pulling out, they are splitting the Personal Systems Group (PSG) off into a separate company. Still, major restructuring of monster corporations typically puts systems and services in turmoil until all the dust settles and unfortunately, it is often the consumer left in the lurch. So I too would avoid HP notebooks, for now.

I've had my Toshiba A505 for 2 years, so far, no problems.

If you are not familiar with Apple systems, and have used Windows for some time, there will be a steeper learning curve with the Apple, until you get used to it.
