What is/are the main causes of very slow Internet Connection. the ISP is Aol. OS XP Pro. Plenty of free space on HD's.

My guess would be the ISP Provider-> AOL.

Has it always been this way?

Malware and viruses can cause slowdowns.

Which AOL Internet subscription? Dialup? Broadband? If broadband, what's the promised bandwidth?

Reply to Steve, No , at first it was ok, it has got slower in the last few months, I have full Macafee protection so don't expect malware etc,.
Reply to Tony, It's a Broadband Internet subscription, will have to check with AOL what promised band width, I sometimes get, when going on line, a message saying " if connection is slow try basic" never worked for me, could'nt find 'basic'.
    get back to you later.
    Thanks, Spanner

    Test your speed here:

    http://speedtest.net/

If it comes back "a lot" lower than what you are paying for you'll need to contact AOL.

Tested with your speed test , came back a little higher than the speed test I used, However I have contacted AOL with the tests results, I am now waiting reply. Not happy with connection speed, much the same for each of the 3 Computers I use. I expect a small drop in speed if all 3 PC's are online.
    Back soon .

There can be all kinds of programs running in background that you aren't aware of. I've been having very slow page changes (almost a full minute per change) on one web-site I visit regularly. I activated "Simple Adblock" to cut down the number of advertisements that were showing up, and that helped a little.

I went looking through Windows Task Manager's applications list and found two programs that I didn't recognise, "SunKistEM" and "HPHa3mon ". I did a search to see what they were and couldn't understand why they were even on my computer, let alone being in the Start menu.

I used my Norton Security page's Start-up manager to turn them both off. The improvement was quite significant. The web page that was taking 55 seconds now opens in about 5 seconds. BTW, I'm using XP Home and my ISP is Comcast.

Thanks Frank, I always check my Task Manager to see what I don't need to be running in background, usualy I only want 'work in hand'. I also do the defragging, and clear cookies regularly, mainly because I have to be seen to do what I am telling others to do in our over 50's forum
Where do you get 'Simple Adblock'? that might be useful to know.

Update on this, Had reply from ISP, who suggested connection problems, carried out their tests, changed filters, re-setup router as per their instructions. NO improvement. now waiting for them to do a remote check, tomorrow, Monday 11th.
    Let you know results.

    Update.
The remote check did not happen, too busy with other matters at our forum to follow this up. Will try again this next week.
