A friend's 2-year old Dell computer has an internal V90 modem and is using Windows XP Pro which was connecting to AOL just fine until a couple of days ago. Now there is no dialling up noise which seems to point to the modem just not working even though diagnostics indicate that it's working fine, and the phone line is OK.
A sign on the systray indicates "A network cable has come unplugged" but the physical connections seem fine. I'm not near the computer now but have had a fair inspection of it and its problem baffles me. I believe she has recently installed Norton Antivirus software, but otherwise no changes have been made. The modem indicates that it is enabled and is connected to "Com 3 ". Could that be the wrong port? If it is, I've no idea how it got re-assigned to it.

Correct me if I am wrong on this, but I am not at all sure that AOL (AOHell) works with Outlook Express - on this basis I am moving this thread to the Other Internet Software forum for the time being.

COM 3 is the usual port for a modem, especially if there is only one physical COM port. COM 3 and COM 4 are replicates of COM 1 & 2 respectively.

Check the phone cable to the modem and any other adaptors in the telephone socket. Try another cable and remove temporarily any splitters in the main socket.

Go Start > Network Connections (or via Control Panel) - there should be an AOL dial up connection there. Right click > Connect. Does it and is it the Default Comnnection.

Otherwise uninstall the modem through Device Manager and reboot - doubt that this will make any difference as the modem is recognised.

Uninstall and reinstall the AOL software.
Network card installed, but not connected to a network.
