Just spotted this Thread started by Holger Metzger, on the Netscape 7 Newsgroup:
    snews://secnews.netscape.com:563/bf1qd0$h1924@ripley.netscape.com

    From Mozillazine.org

AOL axes Gecko team, dumps Netscape

It has been learned through public and private sources that AOL has axed
the Gecko team in a mass firing and are dismantling Netscape (they've
even pulled the logos off the buildings).

To us, their $2 million contribution to the nascent Mozilla Foundation
now comes across as nothing more than a face-saving gesture.

    Stay tuned for updates.

UPDATE: Looks like folks are starting to post to http://www.ex-mozilla.org.

    Farewell Netscape...

Too bad for all the Netscape users, but you cannot say it was unexpected...

Any word on what will happen with Netscape's browser, or was N7.1 the final version?

    Hi tranquilo,

    This from CNET:

    AOL slashes Netscape staff

    By Evan Hansen
    Staff Writer, CNET News.com
    July 15, 2003, 4:02 PM PT

America Online on Tuesday said it has laid off 50 employees involved in Web browser development at its Netscape subsidiary amid a reorganization of its Mozilla open-source browser team.

The move affects fewer than 10 percent of Netscape employees, according to an AOL representative, who added that the company plans to continue to support current versions of the Netscape browser and the Netscape Web portal.

"Netscape remains a key part of our multibrand strategy," said AOL spokesman Andrew Weinstein. "We will continue to support the browser and the portal. "

The layoffs mark the latest setback for AOL subsidiary Netscape Communications, which has fought an increasingly lopsided battle with Microsoft for browser market share.

My personal speculation is that 7.1 is the end of the road. Do follow the Netscape 7 Newsgroup comments, as they are quite humorous. Jay Garcia posted a brief, and awaited, comment:

Well, I guess everybody is waiting for my comment, and here it is:

    **** MOZILLA RULES ****

    That's it, no other comment(s).

    Need I say more?

So what will happen to the Netscape Navigator forum here, anyone know?

Name change at the very least, I would guess.

    KennyV1967,

Is it really that bad? ;)

Besides, Mozilla is still around, even if Netscape is finished.

AOL Axes Gekco Team, Dumps NetScape

    Hello,

Recently , in fact in the last 3 days I installed NS 7.1 and am finding it to be a much better browser then IE 6.0 unfortunatly I am still learning about the settings and how to manage it as I was a IE user for as long as I have had my puter. Now I have read this post and am disturbed to hear there might not be any support for NS any more is this true?
Should I keep my IE 6.0 on hand and running just incase?
It's really sad to hear this news as I in just a matter of a few days find that NS is much better then IE I belive as far as capabilitys... of course im still a beginner and thats just my opinion.

    Regards,

    FireDancer :(

No fear, FireDancer. Mozilla, the browser that Netscape is based on is still alive and well. Additionally, nothing prevents you from continuing to use Netscape.

Kenny, I couldn't agree more! I detest IE. Someone needs to keep Netscape in the game because it is far superior to IE.

I believe this forum will remain, same as many others. I would of course continue to support Netscape/Mozilla.
    The community is still there.
