Just today I installed XP onto another system Its completely up to date) and had no problems until I installed AOL. My modem does connect with the AOL server to retrieve the AOL access numbers however once it tries to connect to any of those numbers XP kicks me out and reboots. XP also does this Primus and Look Communications as providers. Anyone help you can give would be a great help.

Also I have no problem using the same modem (i should mention this is fort dial up service) on a system running 95/98/ME or 2000.

Might need to turn off the Auto-restart to get any info from the event logs.
Control Panel> System> Advanced> start up and recovery settings

I already did both of the above and i still have the same problem. I called AOL and believe it or not I was told "I don't know, so you are on your own" and "upgrade your system(s) and install Windows 2000 ".

All my systems are updated and are updated constantly so thats not the problem. I've also found on my systems running 95/98/ME and 2000, AOL will not allow me to do ANY anti-virus updates.

I'm want to run version 9.0 of AOL but it hangs up just soon as my password is verified. I also tried version 8.0 on XP and it is the same problems.

Anyone else have any other ideas??

As I have told AOL maybe I should cancel thier service and go somewhere else.

IMHO, that is what I would suggest, too. I have no positive experiences with AOL to report.

If you decide to stay with AOL, however, it needs to work with XP. Open up the Device Manager and see if your modem has any error icons (yellow) next to it. You may need to install your own driver, which you can usually get from the manufacturer's website. Since your comp isn't connecting with any service, I'd guess the generic driver that XP has for your modem might be the problem. When you find your modem, right click and choose "properties" for your options. Post back and let us know how you are doing.

I have tried the most current drivers for my modem aswell as older drivers I have and it does the samething. There are no system errors (error icons) for any device, including the modem on the XP system. I have as of 25 minutes ago installed another modem (Brand New and updated drivers from the manufacturer) and guess what, same problem.

I spoke to a person named Evan Cullens at AOL Tech support and explained the problem and he stated "buy a new modem, if that modem does not work, take it back and exchange it for another, and if you have to keep doing so until you find one that does work ". I also told him I tried the same computer with the same modem and drivers with 3 other ISP's (I took the system to friends houses) and it connected no problem, so it must be a problem at AOL's end.

Anyway I've decided to discontinue with AOL and thier non-support.

Thanks for you help everyone ....................

    Omega,
I am glad you will be using another ISP, because AOL tech support's advice to
    is simply ridiculous.

Let us know how you like your new ISP!

AOL definitely has it's problems. As a very long time AOL user I can verify that tech support has a generic answer for any problem. They'll tell you to try some dumb things. When they don't work will reply. "hmmmmmm, it's on your end n good luck "

From experience. If you change, upgrade your operating system the only way to get AOL working properly again is to completely uninstall it (preferably before system upgraded) then reinstall it. With a cold boot after uninstalling. Again after installing it.

Just back from vacation. Rented a class A (bus style) RV and spent 3 weeks putt putting around in the Rocky Mtns. Loved it. Also the main reason still have AOL service. Could stop anywhere, plug into a phone line n with a local call spend an hour or so on the internet. But after being on cable at home dial-up now seems AWFUL slow. But gotta use it sometimes.

It's not referred to as AOHell for nothing. :) I have cable at home, as well, but have maintained an account with Earthlink for when I travel. I just dropped them and switched to PeoplePC (owned by Earthlink, as it turns out) ... less than half the cost, with many, many more local access numbers.

    ephemarial ...

Go to the PeoplePC site and click on the Access Numbers link. You'll have to enter a complete phone number, but any number will do (I use the old Directory Assistance number, 555-1212) ... it's the area code that's important. Just plug in any of the CO area codes, and you'll be surprised at the lists you'll get, and how they overlap.

I had thought about using Juno or NetZero (same company, same access numbers), but was unwilling to provide the demographic information required to sign up for their free service. PeoplePC's $10.95/mo vs $21.95 for Earthlink, or $23.95 for AOL seemed a good compromise.

With Earthlink (or any other dialup ISP I've used) I never needed any special software to dial in and log onto their network for internet access and email. Not so with PeoplePC ... I could log on, but that was as far as it went ... no internet, no email. Only after I installed their dialup software (a la AOL) was everything "normal ".

Commack, hmmm? I won't ask if you knew Rosie O'Donnell, but I will ask if you knew Fuller Blunt, who was music director at Commack North for many years. He lived across the street from me in Setauket until he retired and moved to NC a few years ago.
