    Salvaged an old power supply from anold computer to use on another project...problem is i dont know how to make it turn on. Any ideas? thanks for any help.

    Plug it into the wall and turn on the switch (if it has one, some don't). It comes on automatically if it works.


    Should be able to measure voltages at the cable ends. Black is neg and yellow or red is positive.

    Tried that....do i need to ground it to itself? Maybe it is shot...i get the 3v and 5v but no 12 volt. Thanks

    Computer power supplies need to see a load in order to output voltage. Just plug a peripheral into one of the power cables and then try it.

    Turning on power supplies is quite different between AT and ATX. Which is it? From your problem, it sounds like ATX.
