Approximately one week ago at the Microsoft Windows Update Page ( http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com ) I have noticed the following anomaly. After I click on "Product Updates" and after the site does it's search of my system looking for needed updates (I'm running WIN 98 SE) and after the recommended updates appear - the little "read this first" hot link that appears after each update no longer functions. When I mouse-over the link "javascript.void(0)" appears in the bottom address window. No other problems have evidenced themselves. Strange as it seems, it's almost as though Microsoft has disabled them. I experience no other problem with any other sites. Is anyone else experiencing this? Could it be an IE6 SP1 issue? I recently updated. It was working then.

I posted this in my earlier thread on the subject
"A kind soul on another board (Nancy) told me of A solution. It is to put the URL for your Windows Update site (for Win98 that is http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com/
    into your Trusted Sites!!
I don't know if that is the only solution.
And I have to click directly on "Read this First ". Open in New Window still won't work.
Maybe, of course, MS just fixed their Update site in between the time I first tried to open "Read this First" and the time I put the site into Trusted Sites. (The link still reads java script:void(0) )
You might try to access again and see what happens before you go the Trusted Sites route on your Win98 PC's.
I am not sure I want MS in myTrusted Sites, so would love another fix!
And the whole thing is so weird since I made and can see no changes in my IE settings (ActiveX, Java, etc.) as a result of installing SP1. Hard to understand why Trusted Sites make the difference. "
    Hope this helps.

...hmmmm I'll give it a try.

Seems like SP1 reset a security setting somewhere, but I can't find it. Strange it only affects the Windows update site.

Maybe MS should just fix the darn site!

I'll post back when I change the trusted site setting.

    That is possible.

As of right now the "Read this first " seems to among the missing items.

And after coming back from the update site I have to shutdown and restart IE for even this site to display properly. If I don't I get a lot of boxes with a little red X in them.

I also checked this on another machine and IE6 without SP1 and had the same problems.

I'm running IE5.5 and am having even more problems. Get "Done, but with errors on page" and most of the javascript links won't work.
I think it's an issue with Sun-Java which I have just updated to install Morpheus 2 (so they can show their ads).
You could try this fix, installing this Visual Basic update:
    http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;Q231917
It worked once for me, but stopped again after I started Morpheus. If I want to download from Windows update next time, I'm going to try reinstalling it. (Maybe Microsoft will have it fixed by then???)

I guess it is Microsoft's way of saying, "I'm sorry."

It's a week later (October 2) and the little "read this first" hot link that appears after each update has vanished from the Windows Update site listings without a trace.

It must have been harder to fix than we could have ever imagined !

WFC_Exile--Well, I do not know about "sorry ", but in another thread it was reported by someone who had emailed MS that MS's reply was that it has eliminated "Read this First" permanently for Win98 and ME Update sites. Supposedly people with those Windows OS's will soon see a new Windows Update site looking like the Win2000 and NT Update sites, and these sites never had the "Read this First" option. In the meantime, MS says to get the "Read this First" type info from the MSKB articles and Security Bulletins it issues whenever a Critical Update comes along.
Not sure I believe a word of MS's explanation.
Oh, and the "javascript void" URL had nothing to do with the problem. It apparently is standard javascript for making a pop-up window, which was the way "Read this First" was displayed.
