I have several old, old programs that work fine on XP in the compatibility mode but they may not work on Win 7.

Is there any problem with having both XP and Win 7 on the same cpu until I determine what works and what doesn't (dual boot?)?

No - in dual boot you will run only the OS you choose to boot.

Bear in mind that Win 7 Pro and upwards can run XP mode - a download from MS which includes a copy of XP Pro too.

I use that mode to run my accounts software (Quicken 2000).

Probably not - if you are currently running XP run the Windows 7 Upgrade Advisor - it will tell you ....

    a) if the computer is capable of running 7

    b) software & hardware on the computer which is not compatible.

If you run XP in a Virtual Machine within 7 (XP Mode) they should run.
