Some of you may have heard that the original version 5.71 Ad-Aware with the reflist dated April 4 was finding lots of false positives on files that were not "Spyware ".
There is now a new Ad-Aware 5.71 (build 2898) available for download. It is claimed that it, along with the April 7 (not 4)reflist, has overcome the problems mentioned.
Unfortunately it is difficult to tell whether you are offered the new 5.71 or the old at the download sites. The new seems to be 881KB versus 877KB for the old.
Strange they would not call it version 5.72 or something to differentiate it.

    Ad Aware 5.71

Has anyone tried this new version and new ref.update to see if things are fixed?

Alicia J--Believe you mean a new reflist, not refupdate. Look forward to seeing what comments your post elicits here.

    Works for me!

I have not have any problems with either version. I just now downloaded the latest (still 5.71) and installed it over my old stuff. It updated the reference list as well so you don't need to DL both of those babies. I ran it and came up with doubleclick which is pretty common. I'll have to stick them in my "banned" list again. This is a new system and haven't made the rounds yet.

    Thanks for the heads up.

Got a response on the LavaSoft forum as follows

"Build 2.899 comes with the current reflist. You should always uninstall any previous version/build before installing a new version/build.
This build addresses some compatibility problems and removes a certain piece of software from the targeted list. "

This seems to say reasonably clearly that the new build AA is different.
In another part of the LavaSoft forum we are told that the software no longer targeted is Speedbit's Download Accelerator. It seems this is not because LavaSoft has changed their mind about DA being spyware, so those interested should read the whole story

    http://www.lavasoft.de/cgi-bin/forums/ikonboard.cgi?s=3cb88f6c2382ffff;act=ST;f=20;t=15

(Wonder why LavaSoft did not change the version number on each of these recent AA "builds ".)

    Hi Jim,

Thanks for the information on AdAware 5.71 Final, and DAP.

I think Lavasoft erred in not changing the Version ID. It certainly made for confusion. Perhaps it was done in such haste, that it was an after thought?

Ok. Am totally confused now. A few weeks ago I went to lava to, supposedly, update the reflist and I think, the updated version. I downloaded SOMETHING and I think I executed it, but my version when I pull it up still says 5.62. Did I do something wrong? I see mentioned in here about un-installing and then re-downloading the new version. Is this what I have to do to get the latest one? (old lady needs a walk-through  )

    Thanks.

    :)

No Panda you still have the older version.

You need to download the version 5.71 and prior to installing it you should uninstall the present version. (They recommend that at the site)

When you get the new one set up, it will say Version 5.71 in the upper left side of the title bar and down below will say build 2.899.

    Good luck young lady.

    Whoa Nelly!

    Jim,

As usual you are up-to-date on AdAware!

An update means a new reflist.
A build means the installer was recompiled to include a new reflist, but it's the same version.
A new version means there was some significant change to the scanning engine

If the above is true, then I have to wonder why, on Build 2.889, the instructions were to uninstall the existing Build, before installing this build?

Things that make you go hmmmmmmmmm!
