Have recently purchased new PC which I am now in the processs of setting up, tranferring stuff across from the old one etc..
As I am new to XP, I have just been finding my way round the new platform and taking my time in customising it to my own needs. So far I have set up my DUN and my Cute FTP connection and have not installed any new programmes. Everything seem to be fine (and fast) until I installed the new printer and Web Cam which came as part of the package and both connect to a USB port, (again this is new to me). The bottom line seems to be that the PC will not shut down properly if these peripherals are connected. By properly I mean that I get to the final screen that Windows is shutting down, there is some hard disk activity and then the screen freezes, mouse pointer and all. I have left it for awhile but then have to turn off the BIG OFF SWITCH at the back.
On rebooting there is no suggestion of anything amiss, - ie no Scandisk or message saying it wasn't shut down properly that you got with 98. Now if if I do not connect these devices to the USB ports boot up and shut down again, the machine goes all the way to switching itself off, which I assume it is meant to do. Is there a problem here and how can I resolve it.
I do not have any Anti virus software yet, or Zone Alarm installed.

I know it is a fairly novice question, but being new to XP and USBs and all that , I assume that any USB socket (I have four) can be used.

    Any help would be great

    Cheers

USB devices are sometimes picky about how they are installed. Since Windows isn't trying to run scandisk on restart, the problem is likely with a program or driver, rather than Windows itself. Try uninstalling the drivers for your printer and camera, disconnect the hardware from the computer, then reboot. Then reboot again and install the drivers without the printer and camera connected. Reboot and plug the stuff in. If there is anything in your documentation concerning this follow the directions EXACTLY. If you still have problems go to your BIOS and make sure >Wake on USB< is not enabled.
