When i start up my pc after it has been off for a minute or longer, it boots into xp pro without a problem.

But, if i restart it, i end up looking at a black screen with the cursor on top left corner. I then have to push the power button to get it to shut off and wait a minute to start the pc again which will load into xp just fine

I have run sfc/re-seated the memory cards/reseated video card and installed the newest driver for it as well/
This has me stumped and it is quite annoying.
Can anybody point me in the right direction?

    Thanks

Hi 78Vette. Welcome to Windowsbbs! :)

In addition to the link rsinfo posted, try shutting down all backround applications that are running the sytem tray and then try to restart the computer. Does it restart ok now? Try booting into safe mode and try restarting the computer from there. Does it restart successfully from Safe Mode? Click Start< Control Panel< Add/Remove programs. Remove any programs that you don't use. One of them maybe be conflicting with the shutdown process. What antimalware programs do you use by the way? Do you have Windows XP Service Pack 3 installed?

Did you try the suggesstions in the KB article Rsinfo posted? What I meant by antimalware program is Anti Spyware, Antivirus, etc. type of program. Do you just have norton installed for security? Any third pary firewall installed? Try downloading and installing Windows XP SP3 from here, http://softwarepatch.com/windows/windows-xp-service-pack-3.html. I assume you have Windows XP Service Pack 2 already installed.

Try shutting down Norton as well. We need to make sure that Norton or any other security program isn't causing any conflicts with the system shutdown process. IMO I have never been a big fan of norton since its a resource hog, its expensive and it doesn't do as good of a job at removing malware when compared to some of the freeware programs you can get.

CPU temp , dust , power supply

also check two areas of hardware

    1) CPU temperature in the system health of your bios
depends on the type of chip as to what reasonable temperature is
heat can do a lot of odd things
Generally you blow out / vacuum out the dust and blow the dust out of the CPU heat sink with a compressor or compressed air can
along with that the temperature safety shut off in the bios may be set to turn off the cpu at a given temp. Be careful though about turning it off or setting it higher. Ask here.

    2) Next it may a power supply problem. If the above does not solve your problems see if you can not a good power supply swapped in temporarily.
