I have Win98se. Everytime I click on a link, notepad opens up. For anything. When I click on a link in my aol instand messenger, through email, anything...notepad will open and not a browser.

I can't figure out why and I've done a search but nothing that answers this questions. Thanks.

    Hi Lighthammer,

Sounds like you file types have gotten scrambled. To check click Start>Settings>Folder Options and then the File Types tab. Scroll down to HTML document and click once to highlight. Below in the File Type details make sure that IExplore is the application chosen. If not, change it.

Click Edit, then Edit again. In the box marked 'Application used to perform action' click on browse and go to where IExplore.exe is located on your computer and choose it. Ok your way out.

    Hope this helps.

If html document is as it should be check the association for URL:HyperText Transfer Protocol. If it's set to use notepad, change it to IE.

Hmm...ok. I clicked on Start.Settings but don't have folder options. All I have are Control Panel, Printers, and Taskbar. That's it. Just three choices.

I did fix the problem but I did it a different way. I went to Internet Options in Control Panel, clicked on Programs, and clicked on Reset Web Settings.

So, now it opens up Explorer. I used Kmeleon but that's another story. Thanks for the suggestions.

(BTW...I replaced the 98 shell with the 95 shell. That's probably why I don't have Folder Options.)

    Later...

If you ever do need to get at the folder options you should be able to open any explorer window (not internet explorer) and click on tools>folder options.
