Hi All,

Please forgive me if these are old questions but this is my first post here.

I have XP pro and am starting to experience a couple of annoying things.

1, For no apparent reason my computer has suddenly decided to lose the DVD/CD....I have surfed the net and found that by going into regedit I am suppossed to be able to fix it but after going through the
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}....but heres where the problem lies....the upper and lower filters that are suppossed to be there are NOT so I have nothing to delete....and no CD/DVD drive....any idea's????

2, A number of icons have gone missing usually in the start menu...the link remains intact but the icons is incorrect ....any ideas about this as well????

Thanks in advance

Here is a link to some info about CD drives gone missing: Click Here and scroll down to the problems section.

I have no experience with this info or the fix so use caution. I became aware of the CDGone fix through PCWorld.

Hi desdichato, Welcome to WindowsBBS. When you state that you have lost your CD/DVD Drives, are they missing from your Device Manager?
When you Right click My Computer on Desktop > Open > do you have any CD or DVD drives shown there?
Have you used any Cleaners lately?
It helps if you list your System Details.

[If this is your main system it would be helpful if you add your system details to your profile. Please click on the link and follow those instructions it could save some time when resolving this or further issues.

A common error is to forget to show your system details in your profile
Quote:
To have your system specifications displayed in your profile, you have to click the link Edit Options, and under Thread Display Options > System Specifications select Yes from the drop-down menu.
If you do add your system specifications be sure to do the above]

Cheers Neil.

Hi desdichato, Welcome to Windowsbbs! :)

For your CD/DVD problem try this, Your CD or DVD drive cannot read or write media.

Also like other members have stated, please enter your System Details. It helps us in answering your questions.

Note: A common error is to forget to show your System Details in your profile:

Make sure to do the above when entering your System Details, thanks.

There is a security work around for a vulnerability in Windows Shell that could allow remote code execution, this workaround affects those icons. Maybe this link's workaround was applied? This information is not meant as a fix for this problem, informational purposes only.
